The Global Program Support team (GPS) is a unit that works across all divisions at Conservation International (CI) to promote strategic alignment and cross-divisional collaboration; review and assess CI’s projects; develop effective communications; and provide innovative solutions to challenges. GPS’ work has a large focus on CI’s field programs in four Field Divisions: Americas, Asia + Pacific, Africa, Greater China, as well as our Headquarter (HQ) Divisions. GPS is responsible for monitoring internal and external factors, evaluating and synthesizing information, and applying analyses and conclusions to ensure maximum effectiveness of CI’s project portfolio. GPS provides technical and operational support to field programs and HQ Divisions, including staff exchanges, project reviews, communications, database management, and in-country support.

The Director, Global Program Support has knowledge of and experience in international conservation, environmental issues, international development, project management, and monitoring and evaluation – M&E. S/he leads the Project Review Initiative, implementing reviews of selected projects throughout the year. Responsibilities include selecting projects, conducting outreach, designing the project review methodology, implementing the review itself (in-country), and following-up (reporting). S/he will travel to field sites at least 6-8 times per year. S/he has relevant organizational experience in collection, synthesis, analysis, and application of information to problem solving within the realm of project management and M&E (development of metrics, identifying evaluation themes and questions, tracking progress over time). The Director supports all of GPS’ functions, including project management, knowledge collection and dissemination, strategy alignment, annual planning, learning, and team administration. The Director serves as a resource for all staff by providing information on field activities and project development and management. S/he represents the GPS team in cross-divisional institutional teams, and implements activities and recommendations to ensure alignment with CI’s institutional strategies. The Director is a resource for guidance, materials, and tools for project management techniques and methods for the institution. S/he maintains global relationships between HQ and the Field Programs, which lead to successful collaboration and input on large initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Project Review

Leads the development and implementation of GPS’ Project Review Initiative. This incorporates: identifying criteria for project selection; communicating effectively with divisional leadership to obtain approval and support; conducting pre-review interviews; organizing an effective field visit agenda with in-country staff; conducting in-country interviews and recording collected information; leading collaborative post-review reporting; and developing a model for identifying specific areas of follow-up. Defining the future scope of the Project Review Initiative will also be key.

Planning, Monitoring, and Evaluation

Develops Project Performance Monitoring Metric in collaboration with the General Counsel’s Office, and completes thorough analysis of results stemming from programs and divisions including identifying follow-up actions for specific projects, providing support, and using this knowledge to identify high-priority projects for review.

Leads, manages, and supervises the annual planning process for field divisions and countries to ensure strategies and institutional policies are put into action through the development of programs, annual workplans, and staffing plans. Supports the compilation and development of institutional reports for the Field Division.

Team Management, Collaboration, Representation, and Administration

Undertakes required administration and team management responsibilities for the GPS team (timesheets, expenses, monthly reports, etc.). Ensures administrative requirements are met by completing tasks required by CI Policy. Guides and provides input to the development of team initiatives. Represents the GPS team on cross-divisional teams.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

    Bachelor’s degree in environmental studies, natural resources, resource economics, business administration, or related field with a minimum of 7 years professional work experience, including: Minimum of 5 years professional experience with conservation and/or development NGOs, preferably in developing countries. Minimum of 5 years professional experience in strategic planning, and program evaluation. Minimum of 4 years professional experience in project management of [multi] million dollar grants. Ability to travel internationally regularly (25-35% of time). Global relationships that contribute to the development of successful projects, programs, networks, and exchanges. Strong communication skills, especially English writing skills for reporting and proposal development. Proven organizational and financial skills. Ability to negotiate and resolve conflicts in collaborative settings. Strong interpersonal skills. Evidence as a self-starter and problem-solving personality. Flexibility in assumption of responsibilities. Field experience in developing countries. Passion for conservation of nature and a commitment to CI’s vision and mission.

Preferred
•    Master’s degree in environmental studies, natural resources, resource economics, business administration, or related field. 
•    Fluency in French, Spanish or Portuguese.
•    Database management, data collecting, and analysis experience.
•    Knowledge of, and experience with, the Open Standards for Conservation, Miradi, or comparable planning tools.
