A Bachelor’s degree in fire science, fire protection engineering, civil or mechanical engineering,
- In lieu of Bachelor’s Degree, an additional four (4) years of fire prevention experience may be considered.
- Four (4) years of directly related facility fire safety experience.
- Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license issued from the jurisdiction of residence.
- Certified Safety Specialist or Certified Safety & Security Director designation from the World Safety Organization,
- Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) Certification
- Certification from National Fire academy or jurisdictional fire academy.
- Professional Engineer (PE) license.
Satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this position, if required. The incumbent must be able to perform the essential functions of this position either with or without reasonable accommodations.
The Fire Life Safety Officer manages and oversees the coordination of internal and external fire protection and related risk mitigation activities. The incumbent leads multi-disciplinary and multi-departmental investigations, inspections, reviews and audits of WMATA facilities, stations and structures to determine compliance/non-compliance with all fire regulations, codes, standards and laws. They are also responsible for documenting all findings from investigations, audits and inspections in order to produce comprehensive reports, presentations and recommendations. This role is responsible for assuring the effectiveness of all smoke and fire detection, communication and suppression systems are maintained in conformance with applicable fire codes, regulations and industry standards. The incumbent provides technical expertise in the review and administration of projects involving fire codes and specification plan reviews. This position has significant latitude for independent judgment and action within established guidelines. Must be willing to work varied day/night shifts based on operational needs of the Authority.
- Monitors the life safety, quality, progress, and outcomes of the fire/life safety related projects throughout the WMATA system.
- Provides recommendations concerning fire and life safety issues to SAFE leadership, to include recommendations to mitigate identified deficiencies, for distribution to responsible Authority departments and offices for corrective action and follow-up.
- Conducts detailed investigations of fire scenes, including those involving vehicles, to determine cause and origin of fires and prepares comprehensive investigation reports.
- Inspects and evaluates existing Authority structures, systems, construction and remodel sites to determine conformance with fire and life safety codes.
- Coordinates oversight of the inspection, testing and maintenance programs of all Authority fire and life safety systems, to include: passive building protection, fire alarm, fire suppression, special suppression, fire extinguishers, monitoring, and communications systems.
- Conducts multi-disciplinary annual inspections of Authority facilities, equipment and systems to evaluate the effectiveness of fire and life safety programs, conformance to fire and life safety code requirements, conditional and operational readiness of fire and smoke detection, communication and suppression systems.
- Maintains a variety of data and records regarding fire inspection and prevention activities; prepares reports regarding fire inspection or prevention as required.
- Conducts training of Fire Safety, Safety and other in-service related program as directed by management.
- Conducts inspections of construction projects to ensure compliance with adopted fire codes, national standards, and approved construction plans.
