University of Maryland University College (UMUC) seeks a Network Engineer in the Office of Information Technology. Reporting to the Manager of the Network Center, the Network Engineer will be responsible for monitoring and maintenance of the global UMUC WAN/LAN network in a 24/7 environment. They will support the Service Desk and Network Engineering teams by responding to service interruptions or impairments and resolving production network issues in accordance with established procedures. The engineer will also handle routine network activities related to monitoring, operations, installation or maintenance. The ideal candidate will be a highly technical engineer that is able to establish ownership of issues from identification through resolution. Specific responsibilities include:
Proactive monitoring of all enterprise services and network devices to identify faults within the system.
Troubleshooting and resolution of issues in accordance with the established SLA to ensure network availability at all levels of the OSI Model.
Act as an escalation point for Service Desk and other UMUC engineering for network and voice issues.
Coordinate vendor troubleshooting and repair activities.
Provide customer status of ongoing issues via phone, email and/or ticket notes.
Implement approved network change activities under the direction of the Network Operations Center Manager. These changes will include network systems hardware, system configuration and operating system updates.
Document network designs at all levels of the OSI Model.
Must be flexible to work in a 24/7 environment across all shifts including weekends and holidays.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning
- 3+ years working in a multiple shift Network Operations Center environment.
- Excellent troubleshooting, problem solving and analytical skills, with strong attention to detail.
- Ability to work multiple issues simultaneously under pressure.
- Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing requirements.
- Demonstrated experience working within ITIL service management frameworks such as change management, incident management, and problem management
- Demonstrated experience troubleshooting and resolving transport related problems.
Demonstrated experience in Layer 2 based protocols in a Cisco environment (L2TP, STP, VLAN)
Demonstrated experience in Layer 3 routing protocols in a Cisco environment (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP)
Demonstrated experience troubleshooting VPN issues
Experience with SIP protocols, Cisco Call Manager 10.X and Cisco Unified Contact Center platforms
PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Proficiency with instrumenting network devices and services, generating ad-hoc reports and configuration management using Solarwinds Orion
Hands on experience with packet capture tools such as Wireshark
Demonstrated experience administering Palo Alto firewalls
Cisco CCNA or other network manufacturer certifications.
Some programming experience to automate tools as needed.
Zenoss, Splunk, Cisco real time monitoring tool, Cisco Prime Infrastructure
