JOB TITLE: Communications Associate (Writer/Editor I)

CURRENTLY IN POSITION: Open

POSITION SUMMARY: This position supports the work of the communications team, which has responsibility for all association communications strategies and tactics, including writing original content for various print and digital media; editing content produced by coworkers across the association; managing use of the association’s third-party email marketing system; occasionally serving as a media relations contact; contributing to association brand management and messaging; and other duties, as needed. This position requires collaboration with staff across the association on a broad variety of projects, as well as with association member organizations and other external audiences.

REPORTS TO: Director of Communications (direct supervisor)

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND JOB RESPONSIBILITIES*:

Writing and Editing Support

• original research, reporting, and writing for a variety of editorial projects, including, but not limited to, news and feature stories for the association website, blog posts, and education program summaries

• substantive editing and copy editing, consistent with association style, on a variety of deliverables, including technically complex policy letters, articles on advocacy and other association work, research briefs, and marketing and education collateral

• editorial review, fact-checking, and approval of website content contributed by other staff

• management of website editorial calendar

Email Systems Management

• format and distribute through a third-party service periodic email communications to members and other audiences, including weekly and monthly newsletters

• manage links between email communications and website, including content flow and media library

• manage distribution lists for association email communications and serve as liaison to other departments on email management issues

• process customer contact updates as indicated through bounce and other reports generated by email distributions

Other Duties

• curate and distribute internally twice-weekly roundups of mass media reports about association members

• assist with media relations, including serving as an initial point of contact for journalists in the director of communication’s absence and arranging interviews with association leadership

MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

• demonstrated high proficiency in written and verbal communications, including ability to present complex information in plain language consistent with internal and external style standards

• proficiency in Microsoft Office suite

• experience with third-party email marketing systems (e.g., Constant Contact)

• familiarity with website content management systems (WordPress preferred)

• familiarity with website and social media metrics (e.g., Google Analytics)

• strong organizational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritize assignments, meet tight deadlines, and regularly report on status

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

• bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., journalism, communications, public relations)

• at least three years’ writing and editing experience, especially putting complicated information into plain language and telling compelling stories

• health care policy and association experience preferred, but not required
