Leidos Biomedical Research Inc.’s Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides exceptional quality animal care and technical support services for animal research performed at the National Cancer Institute (NCI). The LASP contributes to improving human health, developing new therapies, and improving existing treatments for cancer and other diseases while ensuring safe and humane care of animals.


The Director, Laboratory Animal Sciences Program (LASP) provides management for 24 animal research facilities, 19 of which are located in Frederick and five in Bethesda. Collectively, the facilities support over 240 investigators encompassing more than 600 Animal Study Proposals (ASPs). The Director also serves as lead on new technology development, particularly in an area of his/her own scientific and professional expertise. Responsibilities include directing the Laboratory Animal Sciences Program, which comprises several integrated organizational units that provide animal-based research support services to NCI and other NIH institutes on both Frederick and Bethesda campuses. Formulating short-term and strategic plans for operations, projects, staffing and budget, and providing leadership for financial and resource management. Developing and implementing operational goals and objectives. Overseeing and evaluating program performance. Directing senior staff in management of animal research programs and associated core services. Providing functional guidance and mentorship to responsible managers.



- Ph.D. from an accredited university including a strong background in applied research with animal models, or graduation from a veterinary school accredited by the AVMA (e.g. D.V.M. or V.M.D.) or satisfactory completion of the foreign equivalency examination (passing grade) given by the AVMA.

- ACLAM board eligibility/certification; completion of an ACLAM recognized residency/training program is preferred.

- A combination of these degrees is highly desired.

- Foreign degrees must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency.

- In addition to the education requirements, a minimum of ten (10) years of experience managing animal research or development programs is required.

- Previous experience in leading large, complex, multidisciplinary laboratory animal science programs and a thorough understanding of policies and regulations that govern animal use.

- A strong background in research and the use of animal models in understanding human disease, as well as demonstrated experience in program/project man agement, process improvement and staff development.

- Must excel in customer relations with both internal and external clients.

- This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.
