Old Dominion University, a Commonwealth of Virginia state-supported doctoral institution with a main campus of 188 acres and higher education centers located in Virginia Beach, Hampton and Suffolk, is seeking an experienced individual to serve as the Internal Audit Director.  Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the position is responsible for managing and directing the internal auditing activities of the University; providing University management and the Board of Visitors with an independent and objective appraisal of the University’s financial, operational, compliance and information systems; and evaluating the internal control environment and compliance with appropriate University and Commonwealth policies and procedures.

 

The successful candidate will hold a Master’s degree in Accounting or a related field or a Bachelor’s degree with experience equivalent to a Master’s degree, and will have comprehensive knowledge of and demonstrated ability to apply generally-accepted accounting principles and auditing standards in a wide range of operational and organizational situations.  Candidates must be able to demonstrate the ability to establish the scope of audit engagements and to plan and budget for audits; coordinate several concurrent audits involving assigning, scheduling and supervising the work of a team of subordinate auditors involving a multi-disciplined approach; appraise objectively the performance of subordinates; evaluate the performance of compliance of organizational units and derive logical conclusions and recommendations for improvements; write narrative audit reports and present their content verbally; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with University officials and employees.       

 

Candidates with extensive experience in managing an internal audit program in a complex agency or institution of higher education are preferred. Certification as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) is also preferred.
