Howard Community College is seeking a Senior Network Engineer to serve as the lead for the development, implementation, maintenance and operation of the College's complex data network. Under the general direction of the Director of User and Network Services (UNS) this position is responsible for coordinating the activities of the college’s network services group consisting of 2 network engineers and student interns. This person will be serving in a working technical manager position which requires current, in-depth knowledge of and experience with local and wide area networking technologies. This includes but is not limited to infrastructure, control systems, and networked services. The person must communicate effectively, be a self-starter, be creative, and be able deliver solutions in a timely manner.

Primary Duties:
  • Serve as primary technical architect/engineer/consultant for developing, engineering, and installing wired and wireless voice/video/data network infrastructure.
  • Design, implement, manage, support and document wired and wireless voice/video/data networks.
  • Troubleshoot, isolate and resolve problems with communications and networking hardware/software.
  • Provide strategic planning, fiscal coordination, budget preparation and resource management for the network services group.
  • Lead and develop a small team of technical employees, student workers and contractors or subcontractors in ongoing expansion and upgrade of campus networks.
  • Provide network design, specification and budget for wiring new construction and renovations.
  • Monitor and manage connectivity and quality of services of the campus voice/video/data network.
  • Provide on call and off-hours support to resolve problems with essential network systems as needed.

  • BS Degree in information systems or electronics with field experience in network engineering management with 8 years’ experience; or approved combination of education and a minimum of 15 years’ experience.
  • Thorough knowledge of network operating systems, particularly Unix, Linux and Microsoft.
  • Thorough knowledge of routers, switches, WAN equipment, Wireless equipment including programming, setup and operation.
  • Thorough knowledge of networking protocols.
