The Montgomery County Department of Recreation is seeking energetic and enthusiastic, full time Recreation Specialists to support three program areas: Senior Center, Recreation Community Center and Youth Development.

Responsibilities for all Recreation Specialists include preparing and maintaining programs in CLASS, performing closeout responsibilities, providing internal and external customer service, preparing paperwork such as reports, timesheets, and marketing and communication tools. All assignments may have weekend and evening requirements to support program. These positions may require the ability to attend meetings or perform work at locations outside the office. These positions may be underfilled at the Public Administrative Intern (PAI) level, grade 16. Salary: $38,675 - $63,497.

As a manager/supervisor of unionized employees, these positions have responsibility for fostering a positive labor relations environment based on mutual trust, respect, and cooperation.

Senior Center
This position requires working with a multilingual community. The successful candidate will be required to pass an advanced proficiency second language/English language examination assessing the following skills: oral communication, reading comprehension, interpreting AND translating text from the second language to the English language and vice versa.

Duties to include: planning, developing, organizing, directing and evaluating a wide variety of multi-lingual programs for diverse seniors at local community recreation centers and senior program facilities. This programming will include arts, entertainment, fitness and wellness. The employee's areas of responsibility will be to plan, organize, develop, schedule, administer, and evaluate Senior recreation programs. This work involves managing a variety of program elements for appropriate age participants and hiring, training and supervising part-time and volunteer staff. Employee also maintains an active working relationship with other agencies, schools and special interest groups; coordinates recreation programs; reviews and evaluates programs and makes recommendations to improve and expand programs; prepares operating budget for approval by the supervisor and operates within the framework of the approved budget; plans and schedules for recreational personnel, volunteers, and facilities for senior programs. Effective oral and written skills are necessary.

Community Recreation Center
This employee is responsible for developing, organizing, planning, and directing a Community Recreation Center. Responsibilities include maintaining the facility, programs and services in the following areas: planning and implementing programs and events including summer and after school children's programs, senior programs, special events, etc.; hiring, training, supervising, and scheduling employees; maintaining expenditures within budgetary constraints; providing oversight of the building including coordinating the cleaning and maintenance of the equipment and facility; and establishing and providing support to a viable citizen advisory committee; scheduling rental spaces; purchasing and oversight for supplies and equipment; promoting center and building rapport within the community including building relationships with local civic associations, nonprofits and significant individuals and promoting the center and building rapport within the community including building relationships with local civic associations, nonprofits and significant individuals.

Youth Development

This includes but is not limited to such youth development areas as middle school and high school after school programs, youth workforce development, youth leadership and a wide variety of teen events and activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Experience: Two (2) years of professional recreational work experience involving planning, organizing, supervising and implementing an area-wide, county-wide or special interest recreation program.
Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
Equivalency: An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted.
License: Possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License appropriate to the equipment operated by an employee in this class from the applicant's state of residence.
