The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center is part of the College of Arts and Humanities at the University of Maryland. The Center is a collective space that includes 4 robust programs: School of Music (SOM), School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies (TDPS), the Visiting Artist Program and the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library (MSPAL). Collaboration between the 4 programs is a core operating tenet of the Center with the goal of building the future of the arts. Performances by the visiting artists and by students and faculty of SOM and TDPS are a central activity of the Clarice Smith Center.

As a member of the Marketing and Communications Department, and providing support to The Visiting Artists of The Clarice; the UMD School of Music; the UMD School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies; and the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library; the Creative Coordinator is tasked with scheduling, facilitating content acquisition and determining that the integrity of that content is intact from graphics and editorial perspectives. As it relates to publications and marketing materials, the Creative Coordinator will ensure that printed and electronic program production, advertising, signage and collateral is completed according to practices and standards, on-budget and according to the schedules demanded by the institution.


SCHEDULING: Write season schedules for program materials, collateral, ads and all marketing materials using Basecamp; manage and updates schedules acting as liaison between this, other offices and with outside vendors; acquire editorial and graphics content, ensuring integrity of that content, troubleshooting, as required;

EDITORIAL: Provide project oversight and facilitate publication proofing for all program and marketing materials; Manage the Master Document (source material for all collateral produced by the Center, as well as for the website and press releases.) This includes: Receiving edits/updates from content creators; maintaining up-to date Master Document file and distributing Master Document for review; Proofreading and approving Master Document updates in collaboration with an outside proofreader;

Traffic ads through the internal design and approval process, and to the publication, including creating schedules for ad production, including copy acquisition from the Marketing Coordinator, facilitating the internal design and approval process; sending the final product to publication; Publications traffic: oversee the trafficking of all print materials through the approval process, as needed, through the Basecamp system.
DESIGN: Provide design support to the Senior Manager of Creative Strategies and Design Coordinator with these specific projects: print and electronic advertising; graphics for video and PowerPoint; Artwork for web and social media purposes for the Center, College of Arts and Humanities, and University; Multimedia presentations and projections for The Clarice’s public spaces by evaluating image integrity; color-correcting and editing files to specific criteria and naming conventions; and cataloging images in partnership with the Production Department and an established system.

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, communications, marketing or a related field;
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in print production, traffic and design
  • A demonstrated ability for design and proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite (Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Illustrator; Adobe Acrobat Pro)
  • Experience using an online project management tool (preferably Basecamp)
  • An understanding of multimedia as an art form — in online and within small and large space applications
  • An ability to meet deadlines and multi-task; with strong organizational and project management skills; an exceptional eye for detail
  • Possess excellent analytical, organizational and communication skills (both verbal and written)
  • Possess competency in problem solving and negotiation
  • Exceptional budget management skills with an emphasis on detailed and accurate record keeping, with ability to quickly and efficiently process invoices and client invoices and promote creative cost-saving opportunities
  • Be able to collaborate, delegate, coach and motivate respectfully and effectively
  • A demonstrated knowledge of APA / Chicago style editorial writing style.

  • Previous experience in a public higher education institution
  • Background in the arts or experience in an arts institution
  • Agency experience a plus
