Communications Manager - Construction

Location: Fairfax, VA  
MEGAprojects is seeking an experienced, results driven communications manager with strong interpersonal skills to plan, implement and manage a full-spectrum communications program for major construction projects (known as "megaprojects") and other major design-build projects in Northern Virginia. Develops, implements, and evaluates a comprehensive public outreach program to targeted audiences. Communicates with the local governments, media, citizens and other stakeholders regarding District's transportation projects. Responds to project inquiries from the public, legislature, governmental agencies, planning agencies, media, citizens groups, stakeholders, and a variety of special interest groups. Researches, writes and edits news releases, publications, and advisories. Manages a web site and toll free telephone service along with a community outreach Speaker's Program. Coordinates MEGAprojects' public affairs activities with NOVA District Communications office and other projects in the NOVA District. Plans media briefings and press conferences. Monitors budget and ensures expenditures are handled properly.

Minimum Qualifications  
Advanced knowledge and experience with a variety of media entities. Skilled in handling sensitive media inquiries and spokesperson duties, communicating effectively, both orally and in writing. Advanced skills in strategic communications planning and providing counsel to management. Demonstrated skills in developing and implementing successful community relations programs, press conferences, briefings. Demonstrated ability to respond to motorists, residents, the business community and elected officials along with members of the media, especially regarding sensitive issues. Considerable experience in several public relations program areas and community outreach that includes program design, development, and management of related responsibilities. Skilled in writing, editing and producing communications materials. Skilled in overseeing staff, setting priorities, developing and managing budgets. Skilled in the use of computers and web-based applications, internet and social media to effectively communicate with and engage the public. Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks.

Note: Candidates selected for interviews will be required to submit an example of a successful communications plan or program. 

Preferred Qualifications  
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field; equivalent experience or training may substitute for degree. Knowledge of regional media and government organizations in Northern Virginia. Progressively responsible experience within the communications industry.  
Special Requirements  
Valid Driver's License is required at time of hire and to maintain it thereafter. Possession of safety footwear in accordance with VDOT Footwear Policy required upon employment. Fingerprint based background check, references, work history, and DMV records check will be conducted. Statement of Economic Interest required upon hire and annually thereafter. Work schedule varies according to job assignments, to include nights, weekends, and holidays. Required to work in emergency situations, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs. Overnight travel may be required.
