Duties

The Visitor will visit the residence or proposed place of residence of the alleged incapacitated adult, and will submit a written report prior to the court hearing to include the Visitor's investigation of the residence or proposed place of residence, the condition of the alleged incapacitated adult, whether a conflict or potential conflict of interest of the guardian/conservator exists. The Visitor shall nominate a guardian/conservator to the Court. Additional duties include conducting interviews and reviewing records to assess claims of potential financial exploitation, neglect or other issues impinging on the vulnerable adult's well being.

In the case of an individual whose incapacity is alleged to arise out of an intellectual disability, preference is for the appointment of a Visitor who is a qualified intellectual/developmental disability professional and who can collectively give a complete social, psychological, and medical evaluation of the individual.

The court will decide what services are required and the appropriate Visitor will be contacted. The Visitor is required to attend the court hearing to present the findings in the report, and to respond to questions per Probate Rule 310(b)(7).

APPLICATION PROCESS: Submit detailed resume, highlighting relevant training and experience, and submit a copy of all professional licenses to the Honorable Laura A. Cordero, Presiding Judge of the Probate Division, via email at judgecorderochambers@dcsc.gov . Upon determination of qualification by the presiding judge of the Probate Division, a candidate for appointment will be placed on the Court panel. Appointments are made from the panel by the judges on a daily basis. Resumes will be accepted on an ongoing basis.

Qualified individuals include but are not limited to:

• Case/care managers
• Human service professionals
• Gerontologists
• Social workers
• Nurses
• Psychiatrists
• Psychologists
• Educators
• Qualified intellectual disability professionals

The latter category may include: Psychologist; Physician; Educator; Clinical Social Worker; Certified Rehabilitation Counselor; Physical or Occupational Therapist; or Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, each of whom must have specialized training in intellectual disability or at least one year of experience in treating individuals diagnosed with intellectual disability.

Qualifications

Professionals must be licensed in the District of Columbia.

Education

Training and experience in assessing the type of abilities, limitations, and needs alleged in the petition is required. Training or experience in case management, rehabilitation, financial management, and the planning of care or treatment of causes or conditions leading to the incapacity is preferred.

Additional information

Compensation will be paid from the estate of the ward at the Visitor's private rate of pay or, if not available, from a fund established by the District of Columbia Courts at a rate of $100 per hour.
