Assists in planning, scheduling, and implementing work assignments under agency programs on a day-to-day basis. Works in the field along with the work crew, inspects work sites to determine scope of work to comply with adopted program service levels and recommends priorities for maintenance and repair operations. Also coordinates equipment use and material requests for work assignments, reviews completed and on-going assignments to ensure the quality of work performed. Generates relevant reports, determines utility, facility and property ownerships through research of county land records, development plans, and geographic information systems. Prepares reports and correspondence as assigned. Participates in the annual performance evaluations for five to eight subordinates.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired into positions requiring a CDL. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

NOTE: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as-needed

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to a high school diploma or GED issued by a state department of education, and three years of increasingly responsible experience related to sewer line construction/maintenance or related experience.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) Class B.
    • Tanker Endorsement within 12 months.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Increasingly responsible experience in maintenance and construction of storm drainage, stormwater management and roadways to include at least three years as a crew leader or lead worker.
  2. Two years continued supervision or leadership.
  3. Ability to prepare work on a daily basis for 3-4 crew members and also estimate job material, time and cost.
  4. Have strong written and oral communication.
  5. Have ability to collaborate with other Fairfax County agencies and contractors.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and
candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Physical and mental ability to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment to include hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness, emergency retrieval systems, and atmospheric monitoring equipment. Replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds). All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
