About the Department:

The primary purpose of the Office of Admissions is to recruit and enroll applicants to George Mason University, including freshmen, transfers, graduate, and non-degree students.

About the Position:

The Assistant Director of Transcript Evaluation manages the evaluation process of international student transcripts to determine whether students are admissible to Mason or an INTO Mason Pathway program and eligible for receipt of Mason transfer credit, if applicable. They supervise and train INTO Mason Evaluators. The Assistant Director oversees the processing of international applications and collaborates with the INTO Mason Evaluators and staff to generate application decisions within a designated time frame. They serve as a liaison between the INTO Mason Center, Mason's Office of Admissions, and the INTO Application Processing Center.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as lead point of contact within the Office of Admissions for international credential evaluation, transfer credit evaluation, and policy and process as they relate to Mason admissions with a focus on those for INTO Mason;
  • Evaluate international credentials for admission eligibility of prospective international students to Mason or an INTO pathway;
  • Collaborate with Undergraduate and Graduate Admissions to determine credential equivalencies;
  • Maintain currency on evaluation standards, educational practices, and the latest information on academic policy regarding admission standards both domestically and internationally;
  • Review status of student's former/current institution for accreditation or recognition in country of origin;
  • Maintain currency regarding Mason policy on minimum language requirements and international grading scale conversions;
  • Consult with INTO Center Director on any possible exceptions;
  • Determine and record final admissions decision for applicants, and communicate decision to INTO agents in a timely manner;
  • Work within designated time frames and under high performance expectations;
  • Provide a timely and accurate response to inquiries pertaining to credential evaluation policy and pathway admission decisions; accurately and securely track receipt, evaluation, and dissemination of credentials for evaluation within designated caseload;
  • Collaborate with supervisor and the INTO Enrollment Manager to develop procedures and coordinate workflow for the transcript evaluation process;
  • Supervise, evaluate, train, and provide feedback to INTO Mason Evaluators on their performance, and keep them up to date on credential evaluation standards and all operational procedures related to evaluation process;
  • Write documentation as necessary to explain policies and procedures;
  • Assist with training and dissemination of information to Mason faculty and staff, INTO agents, and INTO staff as needed;
  • Continuously review and assess operations to ensure efficiency; develop, document, and execute INTO evaluation procedures, and effectively train others; ensure the INTO Evaluators are producing accurate and timely work, provide constructive feedback to assigned employees throughout the year, and complete annual performance reviews;
  • Gain/maintain ongoing and increased proficiency in international credential and transfer credit standards;
  • Attend online and external training sessions to keep current on changes in systems, processes, and resources;
  • Coordinate communication and ongoing contact with faculty and staff in various campus units;
  • Produce periodic reports for supervisor and graduate units regarding evaluation statistics;
  • Help other team members both within INTO Mason and the Office of Admissions, as needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Experience in processing complex calculations;
  • Experience with student information data systems;
  • Experience in researching GPA equivalents;
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating foreign academic credentials including calculating GPAs, translating foreign grading scales, and determining transfer credit at a post-secondary institution;
  • Knowledge of various country educational systems, international credentials evaluation procedures, and transfer credit evaluation procedures for both US and international institutions;
  • An understanding of the higher education experience, including the ability to effectively communicate with students, parents, faculty, and administrators;
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated skills in planning, prioritizing, and determining options/making recommendations;
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally and ethnically diverse populations and possess exceptional cross-cultural communication skills;
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects;
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and work under pressure while maintaining attention to detail; and
  • Demonstrated solid work ethic and customer service orientation.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master's degree in related field;
  • Two or more years of experience evaluating foreign academic credentials including calculating GPAs, translating foreign grading scales, and determining transfer credit at a post-secondary institution;
  • Demonstrated experience managing staff members;
  • Professional work experience at a college or university;
  • Experience with a CRM platform; and
  • Bilingual.
