About the Department:

The Law & Economics Center at George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School is a national center for research and education that focuses on timely and relevant economic analysis of legal and public policy issues. To fulfill its education mission, the LEC provides dynamic training programs in Law &Economics to sophisticated domestic and international audiences including judges, academics, lawyers, government authorities and staff members, and attorneys general and their senior staff. The George Mason University Antonin Scalia Law School, with its prestigious worldwide ranking in legal education, is the only public university law school in Northern Virginia and is strategically located in Arlington, Va., just two miles from downtown Washington, D.C. About the Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to assist the center with its financial operations, including tracking expenditures, creating and tracking the budget, processing payments, and providing financial analysis and reports. The position ensures center compliance with university policies and procedures and provides fiscal oversight and guidance to center staff and leadership.

Responsibilities:
  • Manages daily accounting operations and the accounting system. This includes but is not limited to processing transactions and tracking donations/contributions, completing payment request forms and reimbursements, and reconciling centers books. Ensures that personnel costs are aligned to appropriate funding sources. Manages center purchases. Prepares weekly reports pertaining to donors and contributions. Maintains integrity of fiscal data for the center. Works closely with law school finance director to ensure that center's fiscal processes and reports align with center's needs;
  • Data analysis. Analyzes center financials as requested by center executive director and director of external relations. This includes budget to actual reports and anticipated burn rates, analysis of donor contributions, analysis of budget for center initiatives;
  • Manages monthly reconciliation process. Works closely with the law school's finance director to ensure center accounts align with law school records and accounts; and
  • Fiscal policy and procedure governance and internal control. Manages all financial workflows of the center. Attends university fiscal meetings to ensure that center work aligns with the expectations of the university. Coordinates center activities with the law school's finance director and the center executive director and director of external relations.

Required Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or equivalent;
  • Extensive experience working with financial systems;
  • Experience working with purchasing systems and procedures;
  • Experience reporting and forecasting budgets;
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles;
  • Ability to budget, forecast budget and provide financial analysis;
  • Ability to work in Excel;
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at one time; and
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work independently.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in related field;
  • Experience working in and pulling reports from Banner;
  • Experience working in and pulling reports from Micro Strategy;
  • Experience in Higher Education;
  • Experience working with senior executives or administrators; and
  • Knowledge of commonwealth fiscal policies.
