About the Department:

Founded in 2006, the Department of Global and Community Health offers a BS in Community Health; a MS in Global Health; a MPH with concentrations in Community Health Promotion, Epidemiology, Food Security and Nutrition, Global Health, Health Equity and Social Justice, Health Policy, and Public Health Practice (online); and PhD in Public Health with concentrations in Epidemiology and Social and Behavioral Sciences, enrolling over 600 students. All degrees programs are accredited by the Council on Education for Public Health. The department includes 26 full-time faculty members with backgrounds in biostatistics, environmental health, epidemiology, global health, and social and behavioral sciences, who are committed to the ideals of health equity and social justice among underserved domestic and global populations.

About the Position:

The primary purpose of this position is to develop a program of scholarly research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, participating in university, college and departmental governance, professional and public service, and performing related instructional assignments such as supervising senior projects, student internships and practicum.

Responsibilities:

• Teaches assigned courses in accordance with faculty expectations as outlined in the workload policy and GMU faculty handbook;
• The typical instructional workload is 24 courses per semester, with the option to teach over the summer;
• Teaching modalities will include both in-person and online, and possibly hybrid courses;
• Optimizes the online teaching environment to be conducive to student learning by developing creative, challenging, and evidence-based learning opportunities;
• Proficiently uses online technology and resources to provide informed feedback and critique in a thoughtful, well-written, and timely manner;
• Creates an atmosphere of engagement in student learning that reflects the strategic goals of the university;
• Upholds the expectations of undergraduate/masters/doctoral level work with respect to program and course learning outcomes;
• Develops a program of research that has the potential to be funded by governmental agencies and foundations;
• Contributes to the body of scientific knowledge through disseminating the results of research through journal publications and scientific presentations;
• Demonstrates commitment to scholarly advancement through translational research, scholarly inquiry, and dissemination through professional journals and conferences;
• Serves on departmental and George Mason University committees to promote the development and growth of the institution;
• Serves as a liaison for the department, College, and University in the community or through professional activities;
• Actively participates in professional associations; and
• Advises students on academic, professional, and/or personal issues while providing referrals when appropriate.

Required Qualifications:

• An earned doctoral degree (e.g., PhD, DrPH, ScD) in a public health, epidemiology, behavioral, or social science discipline or a closely-related field by spring 2024;
• Public health-related research experience;
• Record of refereed publications;
• Active or recent history of extramurally funded research for midcareer and senior candidates;
• Strong oral and written communication skills; and
• Experience teaching and/or mentoring students at the undergraduate and/or graduate levels.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Candidates for associate or full professorships ideally will have an established and funded line of research and experience with mentoring across the academic spectrum (e.g., graduate students, junior faculty);
• Candidates for assistant professorships ideally will have postdoctoral fellowship training with an established trajectory of refereed publications and evidence of research funding (extramurally funded grants or awards); and
• Preference will be given to candidates who can teach a wide range of courses for MPH and doctoral public health students.

About the Department of Global and Community Health:

The Department of Global and Community Health has 24 full-time faculty members and an active research portfolio of approximately $2 million that focuses on public health research and teaching. Extramural research support comes from the National Institutes of Health, National Science Foundation, the National Institute for Justice, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Faculty expertise is multidisciplinary with members in epidemiology, biostatistics, and the social and behavioral sciences.

The Department prepares students for careers in public health just minutes from the nation's capital. About the College of Public Health:

The College of Public Health is located in the new Peterson Family Health Science Hall, which has 165,000 square feet of offices, conference rooms, classrooms, and wet and dry labs. The College has accredited degree programs in Global and Community Health, Health Administration and Policy, Nutrition and Food Studies, Nursing, and Social Work, including CEPH accredited bachelors, masters, and doctoral degrees.
