HRL employs over 170 full-time and graduate staff members and over 200 undergraduate student staff members. HRL oversees student housing areas comprised of roughly 6,000 beds within over forty (40) residential facilities, as well as housing the distributed campuses including the Science & Technology campus and the Smithsonian-Mason School of Conservation. HRL is committed to provide a safe, student centered environment that is inclusive of the global community; dedicated to creating a home that enriches the experiences of our students, staff, and faculty.About the Position:The Residence Life Assistant Director of Belonging and Engagement has direct responsibility and oversight of staff training, development, and engagement related to the areas of inclusion, diversity, and equity. The main focus of this position is student and student staff education and development. This position provides advisement and training for full-time staff department-wide as needed. The Assistant Director of Belonging and Engagement is responsible for developing and implementing a transformative inclusion strategy that guides staff training and development, student engagement, and belonging initiatives.Responsibilities:Educational Programming & Engagement:Develop and coordinate comprehensive educational and cultural programming that promotes student-centered success focused on intersectional needs (academic, social, emotional, etc.), inclusion, diversity, equity, identity development, justice, cultural humility, and cross-cultural dialogue in order to meet the outcomes outlined in the residential curriculum;Regularly solicit and implement feedback from students and student staff regarding belonging initiatives;Support and advise Residence Life staff in the areas of intersectional identities, inclusion, justice, diversity, and belonging;Assist in the implementation of a regularly-held dialogue program that focuses on various topics related to inclusion and belonging;Attend student staff meetings, as needed, to engage staff on topics related to belonging; andEstablish a sustainable process for students and student staff to provide ongoing feedback to Housing & Residence Life related to the inclusion and belonging effort and initiatives of the department.Staff Training & Development:Design, implement, and assess ongoing training for the Community Director team focused on intersectional identities, diversity, justice, inclusion, and belonging, in consultation with Residence Life Leadership;Assist in the writing and execution of Residential Initiatives Guides for training of student staff related to inclusion and belonging;Provide on-going training and development related to bias awareness and cultural competency for student staff;Provide on-going training and development for all HRL staff related to bias awareness, cultural competency, and identity-conscious supervision; andMeet individually with community directors and student staff, as needed and requested, to provide feedback and assist in development related to inclusion and belonging.Administration:Co-chair the departmental committee focused on inclusion and belonging;Provide leadership and administrative support to HRL related to the areas of inclusion and belonging;Serve as a liaison for identity-based offices in University Life including, but not limited to, the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment, Disability Services, LGBTQ+ Resources, and the Office of International Programs and Services;Serve as an advisor to Housing & Residence Life leadership on policy and procedures to ensure inclusion is considered in decision making;Guide and support students, student staff, and full-time staff related to the bias incident reporting process;Regularly attend staff and departmental meetings to share information and provide guidance related to inclusion and belonging efforts;Assist with the development of communication to students and student staff on campus, community, and national issues and topics;Support efforts connected to assessment for departmental and University Life goals and objectives;Consult with Residence Life staff to ensure engagement and follow-up with students and student staff is inclusive;Participate in departmental, divisional, and University-wide committees and work stream opportunities; andServe in the Assistant Director duty rotation to provide evening, weekend, and holiday support and assistance to Residence Life staff.Other Duties:Serve as essential personnel and respond to emergencies and crisis situations that occur within the residence halls;Be willing to work flexible night and weekend hours as necessary;In the event of a vacancy, Assistant Directors should be prepared to cover essential responsibilities of the vacated position(s) in their area; andPerform other duties as assigned by the Director of Residence Life or designee.Required Qualifications:Master's degree in higher education, counseling, cultural studies, gender studies, conflict resolution, human resources or related field, or combination of related education and experience equivalent to an advanced degree;Full-time post-master's degree experience (typically obtained in 3+ years);Experience in and demonstrated knowledge of inclusion, intersectionality, diversity, justice, and equity work;Effective skills in oral and written communications, interpersonal relationships, administrative/organizational skills, problem solving, creativity and critical thinking;Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and demonstrated ability to be flexible and adaptable to meet the needs of a diverse and dynamic environment.Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated ability to build partnerships and form strong collaborations; andExperience working in higher education or residence life.
