ENGINEERING AIDE I / II
An Overview
The Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is seeking an Engineering Aide I or an Engineering Aide II to perform technical and skilled paraprofessional work to support the Permit Center. The primary focus of this position is to review, approve and issue permits for work in the right of way. The work is performed under general supervision by the Permits Manager.

The Opportunity - Examples of Work
  • Provides service for internal and external customers seeking information or applying for permits;
  • Issues permits for public improvements by developers or contractors within the City limits;
  • Review applications and issue permits for
  • Reserved parking
  • Sidewalk and street closures
  • Excavation, construction, demolition, and hauling
  • Curb cuts to create new and/or widen existing driveway entrances
  • Noise variances
  • Special events
  • Verifies information by referring to plats and other sources;
  • Prepares and processes payment vouchers, and invoices;
  • Reviews applications for utility lines, undergrounding, and waiver request;
  • Receives complaints and inquiries from other departments and citizens, and responds accordingly;
  • Performs related work and completes training as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

The ideal candidate

To qualify for the position of Engineering Aide I, all candidates must possess aHigh School Diploma or GED with successful completion of high-school-level math and English courses; at least one year of experience in paraprofessional engineering work; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

To qualify for this position of Engineering Aide II, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED, with successful completion of college-level courses in engineering, architecture, physics, and mathematics; at least three years of engineering technician-level experience, at least one year of which must have been performed at the level of Engineering Aide I; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

To be considered as an ideal candidate, one should have good knowledge of paraprofessional engineering practices and procedures; the ability to make mathematical computations; the ability to read plats, plans; specifications, and blueprints; ability to communicate, clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing, with employees, contractors, and the general public; ability to follow verbal and written instructions; experience with any permitting program or software.
