The Fairfax County Department of Public Works and Environmental Services (DPWES) seeks energetic Senior Maintenance Workers to assist a team of 3 or more in the maintenance of storm sewer systems within Fairfax County. Multiple positions are available.

Incumbent constructs asphalt or concrete walkways. Assists in the construction of catch basins, manholes, headwalls and retaining walls, and the laying of cinder block and brick and the laying of storm sewer pipe. Performs construction carpentry work. Sets concrete forms; mixes places and finishes concrete. Performs a variety of manual labor tasks digging, loading, snow shoveling, grass cutting, brush removal, asphalt leveling and raking, lifting, pushing, pulling, and other heavy physical work, etc. Repairs, surveys, cleans, and inspects broken storm drainage lines. Takes measurements of sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and walls to estimate material requirements for construction or repair work. Uses hand tools including, but not limited to shovel, pitchfork, hammer, hatchet, crowbar, wheelbarrow, etc. Incumbent performs various types of inspections on transportation and storm drainage infrastructure along with other duties as assigned. Operates snow blower, self-propelled riding mower and tractor with attached mower. Operates a variety of small engine equipment including, but not limited to weed eater, push mower, power tamper, chain saw, concrete saw and gas generator, etc. Operates an air compressor and pneumatic tools, gas roller, outboard motor, and various size pumps. Operates crew van, pickup truck, flatbed truck, water truck, snowplow, and spreader. Performs maintenance checks on vehicles and equipment. Maintains current valid class "B" commercial driver's license (CDL) for vehicle weight of 26,001 pounds or more and trailer weight of 10,000 pounds or less.

This position works in the DPWES Stormwater Maintenance Operations Branch located at 10635 West Drive Fairfax, VA. 22030

This announcement will be used to fill multiple positions. Position may be underfilled as a Maintenance Worker; the underfill requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.

*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Senior Maintenance Worker position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus two years of experience in maintenance, construction, or a related field.

UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Maintenance Worker (Grade S11, $34,294.00 - $57,156.53). The employment standards for the Maintenance Worker are any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade. Underfill candidates must be able to meet the minimum qualifications of the Senior Maintenance Worker within two years of the job announcement's closing date.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • A valid motor vehicle driver's license.
  • Class "B" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
    • Tanker endorsement within 12 months of hire.

For consideration to the underfill requirements, the applicant must possess a valid CDL learner's permit and this must be clearly stated on their application. Applicants hired at this level will be noncompetitively promoted to the advertised level upon completion of an underfill agreement and obtaining a CDL that permits operating a Class "B" vehicle within six months of appointment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a driving record check, and a pre-employment physical examination to the satisfaction of the employer.

This position is required to be available 24 hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Knowledge of hydrology and hydraulics used in storm drainage,
  • Knowledge of stormwater management and flood control facilities.
  • General knowledge of the use of construction equipment, small equipment, and hand tools.
  • Two years of driving experience in the operation of commercial motor vehicles.
  • Two seasons of experience operating snowplow and spreader.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Hard hat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt and personal fall arrest harness. Candidate must be physically and mentally capable of performing confined space entry operations via 21" manholes with vertical descent using integral or portable ladders further requiring use of all applicable protective equipment and documentation. Ability to pass pre-employment physicals. With or without reasonable accommodation performs duties to include pushing, pulling, lifting, bending, stooping, walking, climbing in and out of catch basins and manholes (with assistance, includes removal and replacement of manhole covers weighing up to 90 pounds with assistance. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and practical skills evaluation.

BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that require a CDL that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee. Must have CDL at time of hire.
