Specimen Controller (Forensic)

Duties

• Performs mutual quality control checks on the work of fellow Specimen Controllers on a daily basis.
• Incumbent is responsible for performance of technical and administrative support functions necessary for successful unit mission accomplishment.
• The incumbent performs a wide variety of detail-oriented technical and administrative duties in a narrow specialty area of a scientific field.
• Uses a computer, in support of the specimen accessioning and handling.
• Functions include, but are not limited to specimen handling and storing, laboratory operations, administrative and logistical support.

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a T1 background investigation to determine your suitability for Federal employment.
• Laboratory and individual certifications are a requirement of the forensic laboratory.
• Appointment to this position is subject to a one-year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315. While probationary the incumbent can be terminated with limited appeal rights

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. To qualify based on your work experience, your resume must describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job.

Specialized experience is defined as: One year of specialized experience which includes utilizing a computer to record, store, and retrieve medical information; sending customer inquiries to the appropriate personnel; and taking inventory of specified items to ensure accuracy of reports. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service, GS-05.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-05).

• This position involves a multi-grade career ladder. At the GS-06 grade level, you will perform assignments of a more limited scope and with less independence. You will progressively acquire the background necessary to perform at the full performance level of GS-07. Promotion is at the discretion of the supervisor and is contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of higher level work, and availability of funds. Promotion is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
