This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to do the work of an INDUSTRIAL EQUIPMENT REPAIRER without more than normal supervision. The ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Applying specific maintenance and repair procedures to install, maintain and repair sewer lines and distribution systems; 2) Maintaining and repairing mechanical systems and equipment that control waste; 3) Operating vacuum and jetting trucks to clear and maintain sewer lines and distribution systems; and 4) Using portable machine or hand tools (e.g. levels, feeler gauges, dial indicators, micrometers, tachometers and calipers) to repair, adjust and test sewer lines and distribution systems. I work under the close supervision of a work leader or journey level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.

This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
A forty-hour work week is typical for this position.
Recruitment incentives may or may not be authorized to eligible new hires.
A relocation incentive is generally a single payment intended to offset some of the relocation costs experienced by the selectee. A relocation incentive may be authorized.

Working Conditions:
You will be exposed continuously to such hazards as: raw sewage from broken hoses, lines, vales or leaking gaskets which could result in contamination, hernia from improper lifting or turning of valves; collapse or death from excessive inhalation of sewer gases; slippery or uneven walking surfaces when standing to repair water or sewage lines; moving parts and machinery such as pumps and motors; and/or moving vehicles when working in streets and piers.
Injuries may result in broken bones, shock, mashed fingers, loss of life, eye injury, cuts, bruises, strains and burns.
You will work inside 20% of the time and outside 80% of the time in all weather conditions. Uncomfortable conditions exist, such as excessive heat and cold, working below ground in sewer manholes and sewer pumping stations, wet and dry wells. You may be exposed to dirt, dust, sewage contamination and inadequate illumination when assisting in repairing, checking or operating equipment in manholes or sewer stations.
- You will respond to emergency trouble calls, such as sewer blockages, backups and missing manhole covers.
- You will assist journeyman mechanics in inspecting, cleaning and making repairs to sewer lift stations.
- You will operate a vacuum truck in cleaning and maintaining sewer systems.
- You will perform preventative maintenance work on sewer lines.

- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver's license.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid State of Virginia Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of starting the position.
- You will be designated as ALPHA personnel and will be required to respond to emergency calls 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. You must be able to work overtime as required.
- You must be able to be CPR certified, Gas Free Monitor qualified, and respirator qualified.
- You will be required to wear protective clothing and equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes.
- You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
