Summary
This position is located within the William J. Hughes Technical Center (ANG-E), Aviation Research Division (ANG-E2), Fire Safety Branch (ANG-E21), Fire Test Section (ANG-E212). Serves as an Engineering Technician (Aerospace) for assigned projects related to aircraft safety research, engineering, and development in FAA laboratories. Supports the testing requirements of the Fire Safety Branch, ANG-E21, primarily on the Branch's operational but non-flyable aircraft.
Duties
The Engineering Technician (Aerospace) will perform a mix of routine and varying assignments associated with analyzing, installing, repairing, fabricating, or trouble-shooting electronic, electrical, and mechanical systems and components.
The technician will set up and accurately calibrate test equipment, including thermocouples, heat flux gauges, pressure transducers, and other electro-mechanical components. Conduct tests, reduce data, and prepare data briefs for project engineers and senior technicians. Assist project engineers and senior technicians in the conduct of experiments carried out on operational aircraft and aircraft systems. Responsible for the maintenance and operation of non-flyable test aircraft and their integral systems including powerplants, auxiliary power units, air conditioning packs, and fuel tanks. Troubleshoot and repair aircraft propulsion, hydraulic, mechanical, and electrical aircraft systems. Assist in developing new fire test fixtures and modifying and improving existing test fixtures.
The technician may provide on-the-job training to developmental technicians and will apply experience and detailed technical knowledge of the applicable discipline at the full performance level as well as applicable procedures and policies. The supervisor, lead technician, or project engineer will furnish general work assignments including scope of work, time limitations, and priorities. Performs routine assignments independently, receiving little or no technical guidance. Technical manuals, manufacturers' instructions, FAA procedures, and other publications provide guidance for most assignments. In many cases, guidance is inadequate or incomplete, requiring the technician to develop solutions based on acquired knowledge and past experience. May develop guidelines for the benefit of other technicians. Uses own judgment, experience, and knowledge to solve problems, complete assignments, and to select the most appropriate approach. Identifies resources needed to perform assignments. Plans and organizes work to accomplish organizational objectives. Allocates resources to accomplish work activities within established schedules. Supervisors, team leaders, or more experienced technicians are available to provide guidance.
Contacts are primarily internal to the organizational unit, with some contact with customers and external organizations. Contacts are made to furnish technical guidance, instruct other employees, share information, provide data, discuss the status of assignments, and coordinate the activities of technical support contractors.
Completed work is reviewed to the extent consistent with the complexity of the assignment. Completed work is vital to the success of the program, and critical to the safe and continual operation of the NAS, FAA Aircraft, and/or FAA academic programs.
This is not a remote position and is telework eligible as permitted by FAA policy. The position does require on-site reporting to the William J. Hughes Technical Center.
