Job Announcement

$2,500 Signing Bonus*

Performs highly skilled mechanical work in the maintenance and repair of automotive and related equipment. Serves as a lead worker and assists lower-level employees in diagnosing and tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems. Other duties include: analyzes and diagnoses complex maintenance defects. Performs Virginia state and emission inspections of vehicles and equipment. Performs road tests on new and repaired vehicles. Operates specialized equipment common to the automotive repair industry and machine shops. Performs related work as required.

Note: This job announcement may be used to fill multiple full-time Vehicle and Equipment Technician II positions located at the various Department of Vehicle Services facilities - Alban, Jermantown, Newington or West Ox - depending on the needs of the hiring department.

Schedule: The work schedule consists of day shifts (5:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 10:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. or 11:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.) and evening shifts (2:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.).

* A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees currently in possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and hired in the full-time Vehicle and Equipment Technician II position after completing six months of employment with satisfactory performance.

Illustrative Duties

  • Performs the most difficult diagnoses and repairs of mechanical defects in automobiles, trucks, trailers, off-road equipment, motorcycles, pumps, generators, and other mechanical equipment;
  • Removes and tears down components and assemblies, such as engines, automatic transmissions, electrical systems, air conditioning systems, hydraulic systems, and power trains, then rebuilds, adjusts, reinstalls, aligns, and meshes such components and assemblies;
  • May supervise work of lower level employees;
  • May act as lead in supervisor's absence;
  • May serve as coach and mentor for Vehicle Service Tech I;
  • Assists lower level employees in diagnosing and tracing hard-to-locate defects or problems.


Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in the diagnosis, adjustment and repair of all assigned vehicles and equipment systems;
  • Extensive knowledge of methods and tools commonly used by service technicians in the repair and maintenance of automotive and industrial equipment;
  • Extensive knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  • Ability to plan and supervise the work of subordinates;
  • Ability to coach, counsel, train and evaluate employee performance to include safety policies, procedures and practices;
  • Ability to maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other County employees;
  • Ability to learn job related technical information, and to communicate such information to co-workers.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”) completion of the tenth grade plus four years of experience in problem diagnosis, repair and maintenance of a wide variety of light, medium, heavy and/or specialized automotive equipment. Related automotive technical education or trade training above the high school may be substituted for experience on a year-for-year basis. Possession of a set of tools commonly used in the automotive industry, such as wrenches, pliers, and sockets and ratchets. Personal tools are required upon appointment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Two current Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications in a series.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Driver's License (Required)
  • CDL - Class B (VA) (As defined)
  • A valid Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) or a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B is required within 30 days of an offer. Applicants hired with a CDL Permit must obtain a CDL B within eleven months of hire date.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, commercial driver's license record check, driving record check and pre-employment medical evaluation to the satisfaction of the employer.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to: lift 50 lbs. on an average of once daily; stoop, bend, twist, and reach many times daily; use ladders extensively; use creeper (or get on hands and knees) several times daily . All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
