Instructional Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics The George Mason University Department of Modern and Classical Languages welcomes applications for a full-time Instructional Assistant Professor of Spanish Linguistics, beginning in the Spring 2024 or Fall 2024 term. The initial contract is for one year with the possibility of renewal contingent on satisfactory performance and departmental and program needs. In addition to offering rich language and cultural content in their areas of specialty, faculty members participate in a variety of interdisciplinary programs on campus, such as Cultural Studies, Education, Film and Media Studies, Global Affairs, the Honors College, Latin American Studies, Linguistics, and Women and Gender Studies.The Spanish program offers an interdisciplinary content-based curriculum rooted in principles of critical and social justice pedagogy including community-based approaches to language learning, Spanish for the professions, and courses on multilingualism. We serve a diverse body of undergraduate and graduate students who speak Spanish as a native, heritage, second or additional language, and we offer a Spanish major, minor, Bachelor's Accelerated Master's (BAM) degree, a Master's degree with concentrations in Spanish, Spanish/Bilingual-Multicultural Education, and Spanish and French, and an innovative online graduate certificate in Spanish Heritage Language Education.Responsibilities:Instructional Assistant Professors are expected to teach a standard course load of 12 credits (4 courses) per semester, and to engage in service at the departmental level and beyond. While not required, Instructional Assistant Professors may also pursue the opportunity to teach or lead Mason study abroad programs during the summer or winter term.Required Qualifications:Successful candidates must meet the following requirements:Ph.D. or advanced ABD status with a specialization in Spanish Sociolinguistics, Applied Linguistics, or a related field; andDemonstrated native or near-native fluency in Spanish.Preferred Qualifications:Demonstrated commitment to or experience in teaching college-level undergraduate courses in Spanish, including both basic language courses and upper-level content-based courses such as Spanish in Context, Introduction to Spanish Linguistics, and Spanish Writing and Stylistics;Expertise in Spanish Sociolinguistics, Bi/Multilingualism in the Spanish-speaking world, Spanish for the Professions or Spanish for Health Care, Spanish for Heritage Speakers, and/or Translation; andExperience in teaching multiple modalities.
