The incumbent will be responsible for assessment and psychiatric care of clients who have a wide range of psychiatric disorders that may be co-occurring with substance use disorders, physical illness, and/or intellectual disabilities. Integral member of multidisciplinary treatment teams. Provides expert consultation and guidance regarding diagnosis and treatment planning. Duties will include comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, assessments, medication management, family meetings and crisis intervention when needed. Documents all clinical information into an electronic health record with e-prescribing. Adheres to and complies with all relevant local, state, federal and regulatory standards.Note:

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Conducts drug maintenance clinic for after care and borderline but ambulatory population to maintain them outside a hospital. Prescribes treatment plan and psychotropic medication based on medication evaluation.
- Supports other therapists in emergency psychiatric evaluations.
- Evaluates exceptionally difficult cases. Recommends disposition.
- Responds to requests for assistance in crisis intervention situations as part of a combined staff approach.
- Provides consulting support for therapists in several disciplines and varied aspects of the mental hygiene program.
- Provides individual, couple, and family therapy both short and long term. Coordinates psychiatry training.
- Participates in group therapy (with a co-therapist) for adolescents and children. Counsels parents of children and adolescents in treatment on an individual and family basis.
- Leads or participates in administrative, programmatic, and clinical meetings.
- Acts as chief of an important component of the total program involving a small staff.
- Evaluates patients for social services, courts, social security, and programs such as vocational rehabilitation, and home-bound teachers.
Employment StandardsMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Extensive knowledge of modern psychiatric theory and practice.
- Thorough knowledge of causes, treatment, and prevention of mental illness.
- Considerable knowledge of available community resources useful in the treatment and prevention of emotional maladjustments.
- Considerable knowledge of the clinical use of educational and psychological tests and techniques.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective and cooperative relations with professional, administrative, and other persons working in related fields, such as local welfare and public health departments, schools, courts, law enforcement hospitals and other institutions.
- Ability to plan and execute work effectively.
- Ability to supervise the work of Mental Health Therapists.
Doctor of Medicine degree. Completion of an accredited psychiatry residency training program at the time of hire and that includes two years of experience in outpatient settings with medication management.CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Current and valid license to practice medicine in the Commonwealth of Virginia at the time of hire;
- Eligibility for Board Certification by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology as a psychiatrist at the time of hire;
- Controlled Substance Registration Certificate issued by the DEA at the time of hire.
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a Child Protective Services Registry check, and sanction screening to the satisfaction of the employer. A TB screening upon hire.
This position is emergency/essential services personnel. (Required to report for duty during inclement weather and/or other emergencies).PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience with treatment of serious mental illness and substance use disorders in a community setting.
- Experience with leadership and management of MD/NPs.
- Experience and skills working with child and adolescents and older adults.
