Assistant Director for GMU EsportsThe George Mason University Student Involvement Office is seeking a student-centered professional for the open position of Assistant Director for GMU Esports. About the Position:This position manages the day-to-day operational activities of all competitive teams, community development and the media team. Focuses on the recruitment and retention of players and overall management of teams for the five Premiere Competitive Games (Valorant, Overwatch 2, Rocket League, League of Legends, and Smash Ultimate and Melee), tournament management, Smash community activities, direction and support for all Media and Communications (Social Media, Video Editing, Broadcasting), Community Development (Community Game Nights, Watch Parties, Women in Esports initiatives and other community building activities), maintaining a focus on diversity, inclusion and creating safe spaces throughout GMU Esports. Oversees all aspects of competition management for the Mid-Atlantic Esports Conference (MAEC) and the National Association for Collegiate Esports (NACE). This position provides supervision and advisement to the eight member Leadership Team and the Graduate Assistant as well as periodic interns and is responsible for leadership development and career readiness skill development for all leadership team members and players within the team. This position assists in long range planning and implementation of Esports strategies as it relates to the overall mission and strategic goals within Student Involvement, University Life and the University. In addition, the successful candidate will work with the Executive Director on revenue generation, sponsorships, equipment purchasing and management for the program. This position reports to the Executive Director of Student Involvement. Responsibilities:Advising & SupervisionResponsible for the training, development, supervision and evaluation of one Graduate Assistant, President and three members of the leadership team;Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, training and advising of eight core student leaders on the leadership team;Create opportunities for growth and development of Graduate Assistant in the area of student advising, coaching, event management, and leadership development;Facilitate experiences for students with a focus on academic success, leadership development, career readiness skills and sportsmanship; andEngage with students around their academic success to yield high retention rates, strong academic achievement, and preparation for successful job attainment post graduation.Event/Program Development & ImplementationOversee the development of a robust schedule of programs and events including regional collegiate tournaments, engagement activities to grow the community and team building initiatives that support students engaging in the competitive player experience;Research, design, implement and evaluate training for student leaders in event development, management, execution and evaluation;Facilitate the partnership with Game Gym to provide oversight of the summer camp program; andAssist with major department programming efforts as needed.Training and Leadership DevelopmentDesign a comprehensive educational program working with stakeholders across campus to develop student competencies in the areas of diversity and inclusion, teamwork, recruitment and retention of players and team members, leadership development, well-being, and conflict management, problem solving, and mental acuity; andEstablish and implement an assessment plan to evaluate outcomes for all training and development programs.AdministrativeAdvise the student leadership team to establish the vision, mission and annual goals for the program;Coordinate recruitment initiatives, practice schedules, eligibility monitoring, student travel, arena scheduling, and promotion of the program and its programs;Lead the program budget development and management;Work with the Executive Director of strategic development of revenue streams;Oversee the Esports facility, equipment maintenance and usage tracking;Develop, implement and evaluate operating policies and procedures for the current and future Esports spaces;Work collaboratively with University partners on existing and new University-wide initiatives;Participate as an active member of the University Life/Student Involvement professional staff, attending departmental meetings, collaborating with other staff members, and assisting in-office and department-wide initiatives and programs; andPerform other related duties as assigned.Unit and DivisionBuild strategic partnerships and collaborative relationships with other departments and key stakeholders to support inclusive, safe, and welcoming environment for all students; andDevelopment and oversight of communication, outreach and engagement for the GMU Esports program such as marketing materials, social media management, discord server, streaming efforts, etc.Required Competencies/Qualifications:Masters degree in business administration, sport recreation, higher education, or relevant field or combination of training and experience equivalent to advanced degree;Knowledge of GMU Esports premiere games: Overwatch 2, League Of Legends, Rocket League, Valorant, Super Smash Bros;Knowledge of college Esports programs and initiatives;Program management skills with collegiate or professional Esports initiatives;Demonstrated ability to provide follow through and meet deadlines;Demonstrated ability to engage in transformational leadership;Demonstrated commitment to diversity and the practice of open and effective communication with students, faculty and staff to build and maintain collaborative relationships;Demonstrated experience managing conflict and competing viewpoints;Experience in developing Esports focused workshops, programs, and initiatives;Experience coaching or being a competitive player in one or more of the GMU Esports premiere games: Overwatch 2, League Of Legends, Rocket League, Valorant, Super Smash Bros; andProfessional experience in Esports program management within the collegiate or professional Esports environment (generally one or more year(s); two years of a graduate assistantship may be considered equivalent to one year professional experience).Preferred Competencies/Qualifications:Knowledge of Esports tournament planning and implementation;Ability to be flexible and adaptable;Ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines, work accurately and quickly with attention to detail;Ability to work independently and collaboratively with team members in a dynamic and diverse department;Experience in developing and implementing Esports tournaments; andExperience working in a high paced environment.
