Job Description:

The Office of Community Partnerships and Engagement volunteer specialist supports the Office's impact by ensuring an effective volunteer strategy and execution in order to best serve our schools, students and partners. The responsibility of the ACPS volunteer specialist is to oversee all aspects of the system wide volunteer engagement efforts.

The ACPS volunteer specialist reports to the assistant director of family and community engagement.

This position is for 20 hours per week (Part Time).


Certificates & Licenses: Valid Driver's License

Education: Bachelor's degree required.

Language(s) Spoken: Fluent Spanish writing and speaking preferred

  • Minimum of three years of experience leading and/or project management
  • Experience working as an active volunteer leader in an educational environment
  • Experience working with culturally diverse communities
  • Advance knowledge of electronic mail and calendars, Windows and Google environment
  • Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to advance the overall goals and objectives of the Department of School and Community Relations and Office of Community Partnerships and Engagement
  • Must be a detail-oriented self-starter with a demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

Essential Functions

Provide oversight to system-wide volunteer engagement efforts including:
  • Identify resources that increase effectiveness of volunteer programs in order to enhance the ACPS volunteer program in collaboration with the assistant director of family and community engagement and the team
  • Facilitate orientations, trainings and meetings for staff, families and community members
  • Conduct outreach to raise awareness of the ACPS volunteer program among staff, families, school communities and other stakeholders
  • Support the development and adjustments of the ACPS volunteer policies, procedures, management guides and handbooks
  • Enforce the ACPS volunteer policies and procedures
  • Monitor the volunteer program in all schools (Including set up and training) to include regular in-person visits to monitor the volunteer program
  • Attend in-person community meetings to promote the volunteer program and meet current and potential volunteers
  • Oversee the Raptor software system for volunteer processing; follow up with the Office of Safety and Security Services on any flagged applicants
  • Work with school staff, school leadership, building Family Liaisons (where applicable) to help coordinate volunteer placement based on identified need and alignment with the school's strategic plan.
  • Responsible for assembling all monthly tracking, reporting and other data points and reporting that information to the Office of Community Partnership and Engagement leadership team
  • Support school-based and division-wide recognition of the work of volunteers with social media and newsletter content, as well as with National Volunteer Appreciation Month.
  • Provide on-site volunteer coordination at specific family engagement events
  • Attend appropriate training and professional development meetings at the Central Office and at schools as needed.
  • Assist with summer programing including back to school supply drive
  • Collaborate and support external stakeholders and community partners, including Volunteer Alexandria, with volunteer identification, list serve notices and other support initiatives as needed
  • Some evening and weekend work required.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure efficient and effective functioning of the Office

  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test

Public Health Compliance
  • Proof of COVID vaccination. Exemptions for religious/medical will be reviewed.
  • Must follow safety and health protocols.
