Rapid Prototyping Research Center Senior Systems EngineerThe George Mason University Rapid Prototyping Research Center, within the College of Engineering and Computing, seeks a proactive, organized, and self-reliant Senior Systems Engineer. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Department:The Rapid Prototyping Research Center (RPRC) focuses on providing its Department of Defense (DOD) sponsors a unique perspective on rapid prototyping that aligns with Section 804 in the FY17 National Defense Authorization Act. Specifically, rather than developing a new system to satisfy intractable problems on the battlefield, the RPRC integrates new technology into existing infrastructure. This unique approach reduces acquisition costs since the sustainment tail is in place. It also reduces the time to field intractable solutions to the battlefield from 10-14 years down to 1-3 years and provides assurance that the prototype involved is integrated with the latest technology, not dated technology due to lengthy acquisition delivery timelines.About the Position:The Senior Systems Engineer will have the responsibility for building a large-scale enterprise application using web technologies, distributed computation and storage frameworks, data collection nodes, and sophisticated, cutting-edge domain analytics, with the system hosted on virtualized and cloud-computing platforms. They will also support the Program Manager to maintain the program schedule, provide input to the program budget, support program planning activities, and deliver contractually required periodic reports and briefs, engineering status reports, and other program documentationResponsibilities:Design and deploy dynamically scalable, highly available, highly reliable and fault-tolerant systems on AWS and other cloud platforms;Select appropriate AWS services to design and deploy an application based on the business requirements and implement cost control strategies on the AWS infrastructure;To guide the development team, create architectural approaches for software design and implementations, including high-level product specifications and design documents;Participate in software development processes. Providing technical guidance to the development team and supporting quality assurance, version control, and build processes;Designs and develops software architecture for distributed systems that are a combination of COTS hardware, software and custom developed solutions;Leads the development of system software including - low level drivers/BSP, API's, applications databases, algorithms, etc.;Assists with design reviews;Works with QA to optimize testing techniques;Provides technical guidance and mentoring to program teams;Tracks industry trends and maintains knowledge of new technologies to better serve the program's architecture needs. Assess new and emerging technologies and utilize that knowledge to improve the current deployment, increase scalability and adoption rates; andSupports the Program Manager to maintain the program schedule, provide input to the program budget, support program planning activities, and deliver contractually required periodic reports and briefs, engineering status reports, and other program documentation.Required Qualifications:US Citizen with ability to obtain a TS clearance;Master's degree in related field;Strong written, verbal and presentation skills, including communicating with non-technical audiences;Expertise in PNT/A-PNT with experience with fielded, operational technologies and systems;Significant professional experience in the following technologies:Software Design Methodologies: Object Oriented Design and Analysis, Unified Modeling Language(UML), Agile/Scrum, and Waterfall;Programming Languages: C/C++, C#, .NET, Java, Python;Scripting: Javascript, Shell;Packages: numpy (Python), BLAS/LAPACK (C/C++);Operating Systems: Unix, Linux, Android, Ubuntu, RTOS, Windows;Cloud-based systems and communications: AWS, Azure, VPN;Algorithms and Analysis: Digital Signal and Image Processing, Matlab, Parallel Algorithms;Source Control: CVS (SVN), Rational ClearCase, Git;Software-defined radio technology and associated signal processing techniques;Systems operations and functions, to include data analysis/statistics, networking, and data security;Systems of systems, mesh processing, parallel/redundant operations;Modeling and simulation of large distributed systems; andExperience with a product development lifecycle including design, engineering, prototyping, LRIP, and the deployment of production systems (products).Mason Engineering: The Future of Engineering is HereThe College of Engineering and Computing at George Mason University is comprised of the Volgenau School of Engineering and the School of Computing.
