Executive DirectorThe John Mitchell Jr. Program (JMJP) at the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution seeks interested and qualified candidates for the Executive Director position. At the Carter School, we educate the next generation of peacebuilders and social change advocates by teaching them that the struggle for justice and equity are at the center of any truly peaceful society. JMJP has a mission to foster narrative change, build peace, advocate for human rights, and promote racial and social justice in the U.S. The program additionally examines the historical and modern impacts of systemic and systematic racism.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities: The role is primarily comprised of the following categories: Leadership and Management - Provide critical and long-term planning and development. Supervise and oversee the JMJP and OUDC programs. Coordinate the work of the JMJP organization. Cultivate and maintain relations across sectors including community archival efforts, experts within the field and relations with participating OUDC schools across the DMV. Monitoring and evaluation of programs using expertise to solve organizational problems. Fundraising and Fiscal Management - Under the general supervision of the founder, manages and/or prepares the departmental budget by coordinating the compilation and reporting of data; evaluating data to forecast for future needs such as equipment, space and personnel, and by recommending alternative methods of operation to decrease expenditures in response to budgetary controls. Develop and execute fundraising strategies. Foster ongoing relationships with donors. Providing updates or checking in with regular or recurring supporters. Assign tasks and supervising the progress of staff members.Supervise program coordinator and student interns- supervise full and part-time staff student interns and volunteers. Develop protocols and guides for student and volunteer researchers.Required Qualifications: Master's Degree;Proactive, motivational leader with a passion for racial justice;Knowledge in the fields of human rights, civil rights, and/or African-American studies;Administrative and supervisory experience, management acumen, financial skills;Proven track record and strong appetite for grant-writing, grant management, and fundraising;Proven ability to engage and motivate a multi-racial, multi-generational and gender diverse work group that includes staff, students, volunteers, and faculty;Commitment to participatory, friendly, collaborative, inclusive, and supportive work environment;Demonstrated skills in professional writing and oral communication; andAbility to sustain multiple projects.Preferred Qualifications:PhD; andSubstantial experience in social justice-based advocacy (5+ years).
