Director of Development, Alumni Relations & Community EngagementThe George Mason University, School of Business, invites applications for the Director of Development, Alumni Relations & Community Engagement. The position's primary responsibilities include working closely with the Senior Director of Development, Dean, Area Chairs, volunteer/advisory Boards, Faculty, and Senior Staff members to develop fundraising priorities and strategies. Washington, D.C. is ranked the 30th most racially and ethnically diverse city nationally amongst cities with a population of at least 300,000 people according to the U.S. News & World Report 2018 Diversity Ranking.Responsibilities:The Director of Development, Alumni Relations & Community Engagement has responsibilities in the following areas:Provide Leadership and Oversight to the School of Business Alumni and Community Engagement:Promotes alumni and community engagement through School of Business (SBUS) advisory boards and councils, including the Alumni Chapter Board, Dean's Advisory Council (DAC), DAC Advancement Committee, Women in Business, that serves as the interface between the school and external constituencies;Provides expertise and guidance in governance, volunteer management, and fundraising strategies to Area Chairs and Center Directors working with advisory boards and councils, implementing programs that improve board member experience and foster philanthropy (resulting in increased philanthropic participation from members);Engages alumni and friends of GMU SBUS to deepen their relationship with GMU SBUS and determine interest in getting further involved;Solicits and secures multi-year leadership annual ($2,500 - $25,000) commitments;Once qualified, actively moves prospects to the major gifts team;In coordination with academic faculty and program directors, works with Administrative Manager and Donor Relations to ensure annual advisory board commitments are formalized through gift agreements;Works with the Assistant Director to prepare agendas and meeting materials, and orient members on the Dean's Advisory Council, DAC Advancement Committee, Alumni Chapter Board, and Women in Business Board. Provides oversight of committee membership and ensures that Board members are engaged in and knowledgeable about the role of philanthropy at GMU SBUS as well as the University $1B campaign; andProvides oversight to SBUS annual fund/appeals.Maintain Personal Portfolio and Supports Comprehensive Fundraising Program:Carries and maintains a portfolio of 60-75 Prospects that are being moved through the donor engagement process culminating in, MAJOR or PRINCIPAL gifts (as defined by George Mason's Advancement team);Actively engages each prospect in their portfolio to ensure prospect movement and portfolio penetration annually;Maintains a minimum of 50% Portfolio Penetration working toward 75% Portfolio Penetration;Submits 2-4 "Asks" per month for a total of a minimum of 24 per year;Meets or exceeds all metrics and expectations set by Central Advancement;Supports successful execution of a comprehensive fundraising program that appropriately partners with and leverages resources from the central advancement team to accomplish objectives;Develops strategies and implementation of major and principal gifts for SBUS, in concert with central Advancement and Alumni Relations;Responsible for the direct solicitation of gifts and for preparing the Dean, members of School advisory boards, members of the school's Advancement team, faculty, staff, and other members of the School and/or University to make solicitations;Coordinates the efforts of those who can assist in fundraising; tracks contacts, asks, and funds raised; drafts proposals and pledge agreements for potential donors; and proposes and coordinates appropriate cultivation and stewardship activities;Travels as necessary for donor outreach and cultivation;Works with offices across campus to coordinate related activities that further the University's mission and achieve fundraising goals;Finds new and creative ways to engage donors that will enrich the donor experience and add value to the academic life of the University;Works with staff to engage all alumni to advance the percentage of active involvement and increase alumni donations;Engages a wide range of colleagues, alumni, donors, prior faculty and staff, and individuals who might be able to help in pursuing/winning major gifts;Seeks the assistance of a wide range of people in identifying prospects who might make major gifts in the future;Assists in overseeing SBUS' portfolio of donors and potential donors both individually and through the management of the team to maximize unit revenue from philanthropic giving;Promotes alumni and community engagement through School of Business (SBUS) advisory boards and councils, including the Alumni Chapter Board, Dean's Advisory Council (DAC), DAC Advancement Committee, Women in Business, that serve as the interface between the school and external constituencies;Assists with planning and implementation of school efforts to raise individual, corporate and foundation funds;Meets or exceeds all metrics and expectations set by Central Advancement;Conducts discovery visits with prospective donors as identified by Central Advancement Research and will also hand-off or disqualify individuals from their portfolio based on an unwillingness to connect, lack of affinity, or philanthropic interest in another aspect of Mason;Works with staff to engage all alumni to advance the percentage of active involvement and increase alumni donations; and meet or exceed fundraising goals;Regularly updates supervisors as to any fundraising and relationship-building activities taking place in the School;Seeks the assistance of a wide range of people in identifying prospects who might make major gifts in the future;Strategizes about which major gifts would have the greatest value to and impact on the School and prioritizes said gifts. Works with donors to try to interest them in gifts that have the greatest value to and impact on the School. Understands that certain gifts will transform the school more than others, and takes responsibility for pursuing and capturing more valuable gifts;Although this position does not have responsibility for securing gifts of under $5,000, this position helps, proactively and in any way possible, team members in the School who are responsible for securing these annual and leadership annual gifts; andIn coordination with academic faculty and program directors, works with Administrative Manager and Donor Relations to ensure annual advisory board commitments are formalized through gift agreements.Supervision of Staff:Responsible for leading and supervising one direct report, ensuring defined metrics are met, advancement events maximize fundraising potential, and strong connections are built with prospective donors and alumni;Responsible for setting goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with the university's plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates;Organizing workflow and ensuring employee understanding of their duties or delegated tasks;Monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching;Receiving complaints and resolving problems;Maintaining timekeeping and personnel records;Passing on information from upper management to employees and vice versa;Preparing and submitting performance evaluations;Deciding on rewards and promotions based on performance;Hiring and training new employees; andEnsuring adherence to legal and university policies and procedures and undertaking disciplinary actions if the need arises.Other Related Duties as Assigned.Required Qualifications:Master's degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of training and experience;Excellent research, writing and interpersonal communication skills;Skill in taking a creative approach to involve and solicit major donor prospects and possess the ability to motivate;Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite and documenting appropriate information in a donor management database system;Skill and ability in displaying good judgment and maintaining confidentiality;Demonstrated successful professional advancement and/or fundraising-related experience;Demonstrated record of successful major gift solicitations and experience designing and executing donor identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies;Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and meeting continuous deadlines;Experience with special event development and execution;Demonstrated experience with personnel management;Experience with documenting appropriate information in a donor management database system; andValid Driver's License.Preferred Qualifications:Significant demonstrated experience in major gifts fundraising (generally 7+ years);Experience in higher education; andPrior supervisory experience (generally 2+ years).
