Fairfax County’s Wastewater Management Program is a nationally recognized Utility of the Future and its wastewater treatment plant, the 67 million gallon per day Noman M. Cole Pollution Control Plant, is a multiple year NACWA Platinum Award winning facility. Cole Jr. Pollution Plant, a 67 MGD advanced wastewater treatment facility.
Note: Must pass three plant operators duty station competency exams by third year of employment.
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Plant Operator II position.

Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from high school, or a GED issued by a state department of education and three years of experience as an operator in a Class I wastewater facility.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Appointees within this classification are subject to a criminal background check, driving record check and pre-employment physical prior to employment.
Positions within this classification are considered essential to the maintenance and continuity of core county operations during the activation of an emergency or critical incident.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
May be exposed to raw waste.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds in a safe manner. Subject to working in adverse weather conditions. May be exposed to raw waste. Must be able to bend, stoop, and climb stairs and climb up and down 40-foot ladder. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
SELECTION PROCEDURE:
Panel interview and may include exercise.
BONUS ELIGIBILITY:
Positions within this classification that are general merit may be eligible for a one-time hiring incentive bonus for new county employees only. This bonus program requires a signed payback agreement between the department and employee.

- Assist higher level plant operators in monitoring the treatment process in operations via computer, visual and audio inspections equipment.
- Collects samples of wastewater and sludge at prescribed stages and time intervals in the treatment cycle and performs basic tests.
- Monitors alarms and adjusts equipment in case of an emergency.
- Adjust chemical feed rates, pumps speeds, and other equipment.
- Reads meters, gauges, and other instruments to record observations in operating logs.
- Makes frequent tours of workstation.
- Process equipment and initiates required corrective action when needed.
- Performs test for Ph, Dissolved Oxygen, Turbidity, and Settle Ability of Sludge.

- Basic knowledge of the principles and operation of wastewater treatment;
- Basic knowledge of the biological, chemical, and physical processes of wastewater treatment;
- General knowledge of appropriate operational responses to emergency situations;
- General knowledge of federal, state and local regulations related to effluent limitations;
- Working knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems (SCADA), Computerized Maintenance Systems (CMMS) and Enterprise Asset Management systems (EAM);
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices;
- Ability to evaluate operational process performance and to select appropriate actions;
- Ability to understand mechanical processes and use mechanical tools and instruments;
- Ability to write accurate reports and maintain accurate records;
- Ability to pass three plant operations duty station competency exams;
- Ability to instruct and explain wastewater treatment processes to lower level operators;
- Ability to work in confined spaces;
- Ability to comprehend confined space training;
- Ability to comprehend and comply to safety practices;
- Ability to maintain effective relationships with customers, employees and supervisors.
Employment Standards

- A valid driver's license.
- A Class IV Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- A Class III Wastewater Treatment Operator's certification issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia within one year of appointment.
