Job Description
The special education resource teacher of learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder at the secondary level develops success for the students' with Autism in academics, interpersonal skills, and activities of daily living by implementing district approved curriculum; documenting teaching and student progress/activities, outcomes; addressing students' specific needs; providing a safe and optimal learning environment; and providing feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, goals, etc. The Autism Resource teacher works with students in the general education setting who are working towards a standard or advanced diploma utilizing evidence-based practices and behavioral interventions to optimize student access to the curriculum.
Specialized experience for this position includes experience working with high-functioning (Level 1) learners with autism spectrum disorders in an inclusive educational environment; conducting formal and informal assessments using curriculum-based tools or progress monitoring measures; collecting data for academic, behavioral, communication and social skills and graphically displaying data; developing individualized reinforcement systems for a variety of learners and supporting learners in inclusive educational environments for the purpose of generalizing skills across settings.
This job reports to the Principal.

Qualifications
Education: Bachelor's degree; Master's degree preferred
Certificates & Licenses:
- Valid Virginia Department of Education license with an endorsement in Special Education, or eligibility to obtain one.
- Formal training or certification in ABA is highly desired (BCBA supervision may be provided)
- Experience and/or additional certification or training in the direct instruction of students with autism spectrum disorders (Level 1 - high functioning)

Essential Functions
- Adapts general education classroom work to provide students with instructional materials that address individualized learning plans within established lesson plans.
- Advises parents and/or legal guardians of student progress to communicate expectations; student achievements; develops methods for improvement and/or reinforcing classroom goals in the home environment.
- Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or goals (e.g. behavioral, social, and communication skills, academic needs, vocational abilities, etc.) using consistent data collection for the purpose of providing feedback to students, families and administration.
- Collaborate with instructional staff, related service providers, other school personnel, families and a variety of community agencies for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes, achieving established classroom objectives and IEP goals.
- Demonstrates methods required to perform classroom and/or subject-specific assignments to provide an effective program that addresses individual student requirements.
- Implement instruction in communication and social skill development for the purpose of enhancing peer relationships and collaborative participation in the classroom, as well as long-term post-secondary outcomes.
- Instruct students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, community-based activities, field trips, etc.) for the purpose of enhancing skill development across a variety of settings.
- Manage student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment using the principles of positive reinforcement and consistent implementation of behavioral techniques.
- Monitor students in a variety of educational environments (e.g. classroom, field trips, transition times, etc.) to provide a safe and positive learning environment.
- Participate in a variety of meetings for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform expected job duties.
- Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. Individual Education Programs, progress reports, grades, attendance, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
- Report incidents (e.g. fights, suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) to maintain the personal safety of students, provide a positive learning environment, and adhere to the Education Code and school policies.
- Supervise and instruct instructional assistants in the instructional and data collection methods required and to provide the materials to complete the tasks assigned to paraprofessionals.
- Support general education teachers for the purpose of assisting them in the planning and implementation of accommodations or modifications in order to meet mandates of individual education programs.
- Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the educational environment.
- May perform additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.
