Responsibilities

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4:30pm, with 1-hour uncompensated lunch, to include weekday on-call 4:30pm - 7:30 am, and weekend 24hrs on-call. There is the possibility of an evening shifts to include but not limited to: 4:00pm - 12:00am/12:00pm - 9:00pm. Federal holidays are not considered workdays however they may be required to be on-call. The Nuclear Medicine Technician will be required to report in-person to the facility during on-call hours if needed.

Duties:
  • Receive patients, explain procedures, and provide appropriate Correctly position the patient for the examination and make adjustments necessary for the required examination. Determine if any special patient preparation is required.
  • Uses specialized equipment to perform nuclear medicine
  • Records and processes the Manipulates the recorded image using Computer applications.
  • Performs administrative and front desk duties to include receiving patients and imaging requests, scheduling, and explaining methods of examination in person and over the telephone. Assesses patient clinical history to determine the most effective protocols. Consults with referring physicians and technicians as necessary to obtain information regarding patient's examination. Utilizes hospital information systems. Files images and reports.
  • Explains test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provides them with assistance during test Gathers information on patients' illnesses and medical history to guide the choice of diagnostic procedures for therapy.
  • Prepares stock solutions of pharmaceuticals and radioactive materials. Calculates doses to be administered. Adds radioactive substances to biological specimens. Administers radiopharmaceuticals, pharmaceuticals, or radiation intravenously to detect or treat diseases, using radioisotope equipment, under direction of a physician.
  • Uses specialized equipment to perform nuclear medicine imaging. Detects and maps radiopharmaceuticals in patients' bodies, using a camera to produce photographic or computer.
  • Calculates, measures, and records radiation dosage or radiopharmaceuticals received, used, and disposed, using computer, and following physician's Calculates numerical data for medical activities.
  • Selects imaging protocols and required accessories and makes adjustments based on the specific examination requirements.
  • Records and processes the Manipulates the recorded image using computer applications.
  • Utilizes the hospital information system and Picture Archiving Computer System (PACS) to acquire, transmit and store digital nuclear medicine examinations.
  • Images to be read remotely will be transmitted by the technologist, according to department policies, utilizing PACS.
  • Performs equipment quality control Cleans and inspects equipment and performs preventive maintenance. Maintains and calibrates radioisotope and laboratory equipment.
  • Enters and maintains data in nuclear medicine information systems and hospital information.
  • Ensures compliance with the NRC, Air Force, and department regulations and instructions. To include performing quality control testing on gamma camera and performing radiation safety tests (ie. Restricted area/unrestricted area monitoring, wipe tests, leak tests, inventory of sealed sources).
  • Reviews images to ensure quality standards are met.
  • Images to be read remotely will be transmitted by the technologist, according to department policies, utilizing Technologist will contact remote radiologist with the exam impression prior to leaving the facility in the event more imaging is requested/required.
  • Practices safety principles. Performs two patient identifier verification of patients. Assists with consent procedures prior to exams requiring written consent from patients. Safely oversees, and brings to practice, As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA) principles for patients and staff. Performs equipment quality control checks. Monitors personnel to ensure protective procedures such as radiation safety, hazardous material communications, and Air Force Occupational Safety and Health programs are followed. Performs tests on radiation protection equipment. Assesses staff competence, and monitors appropriateness of care and completeness of examination Disposes of radioactive materials and stores radiopharmaceuticals, following radiation safety procedures.
  • As needed, assists with student training activities IAW with regulation and course director plans; may instruct new personnel and other staff.
  • Attends and participates in all meetings, staff conferences, and other appropriate professional activities as required by the supervisor.
  • Recognizes the need for and institutes the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest. Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Stock and maintain an adequate level of supplies required to Nuclear Medicine.
  • Recommend necessary repairs when diagnostic quality is degraded.
  • Recognize the need for and institute the necessary emergency measures for situations where a person requires resuscitation procedures due to cardiac or respiratory arrest.
  • Perform administrative duties to include but not limited to: print Nuclear Medicine work schedules/ arrive/depart patients; answer phone/schedule patients for exams; utilize CHCS/HAIMS.


Qualifications

Qualifications:

*Degree/Education: Degree: Bachelor's Education: Graduate from an academic program that includes major study, or at least 24 semester hours, in scientific subjects such as radiation biology, anatomy, physiology, nuclear medicine physics, radiation physics, nuclear instrumentation, medical technology, nuclear medicine, radio-nuclide chemistry, radio- pharmacology or statistics.

*Certifications in addition to Basic Life Support: BLS is required The HCW shall hold and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) (Course C), BLS certifications must be through the American Heart Association or a Red Cross-approved training program. Members must present proof of current certification(s). Computer-based training does not constitute fulfilling the training requirements. Must maintain currency at NO cost to the government. Recertification is NOT provided by the MTF. Credential may not lapse for any period of time.

*Experience: A minimum of 1 year of full-time experience within the last 2 years in a setting corresponding to the requirements of the task order.

*Licensure/Registration/Certification: Certified in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or American Registry of

Radiologic Technology (ARRT), or national certification by the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologist (CAMRT).
