Responsibilities
Schedule:
Monday - Friday, 9 hours between 6:30am and 5:00pm to include a 1-hr. unpaid lunch
Occasional overtime
On-Call required, up to 7 days per month
Minimal Call-Back
Job Specific Details and Tasks:
• Must have knowledge of ocular anatomy; ophthalmic medications; visual physiology, optics; use and maintenance of ophthalmic instruments and testing equipment; ophthalmic and medical regulations; medical terminology; optometric technology; asepsis; ocular referrals and emergency medical treatment; patient transportation; medical ethics; medical administration; surgical instruments and equipment; ophthalmic injectable medications; anesthetic solutions; and, ocular disorders.
• Prepares patients and performs as special surgical assistant in all types of ophthalmic surgery.
• Administers ophthalmic drops and ointments, applies ocular dressings, performs suture removal, and obtains eye cultures.
• Performs general ophthalmic procedures in preparing preoperative and postoperative patients.
• Prepares injectable ophthalmic anesthetics and antibiotics.
• Assist surgeons in performing surgical and laser procedures in the clinic and operating room as required.
• Assist provider in the examination and treatment of ophthalmology patients. This assistance includes, but is not limited to, the following:
• Examine records and forms and prepare patients for current exam and treatment.
• Prepare appropriate equipment and instruments for surgery and follow-up care.
• Assist ophthalmologist by performing technical tests and records results for procedures for the ophthalmologist's analysis and interpretation.
• Assist in refractive/diagnostic procedures to include auto-refractometry, corneal topography, pachymetry, keratometry, ocular photography, and visual fields and pupillary reflex testing and other duties as assigned.
• Apply ocular dressings.
• Conducts vision screening tests to include, but not limited to, the following:
• Visual acuity, color vision, tonometry, visual fields, pupil exams, and other technical tests required by the ophthalmologist.
• Record data of above tests and determines need for further evaluation.
• Prepare, clean, sterilize, and maintain proper stock of all surgical equipment, instrumentation, and medications.
• Prepare procedure room.
• Assist the ophthalmologist with clinical procedures
• Prepare patients for and performs general preparation of pre-operative patients. Provide post-operative instructions as directed by the physician.
• Assist provider in contact lens insertion/removal, and patient instruction. Instruct patients in correct care, hygiene post-procedurally.
• Order and maintain ophthalmologic medications, supplies and equipment for use by the physician. Perform routine checks of medications and sterile instrument packs for expiration dates.
• Maintain and perform required periodic calibration checks on surgical instruments and equipment. Perform user maintenance checks on specialized clinic and surgical equipment. Perform calibration checks on clinical diagnostic equipment and documents such calibration according to specification listed on equipment.
• Provide comprehensive computerized patient appointment scheduling, patient administrative and clerical tasks experience.
• Provide a wide variety of duties to assist the optometrist/ophthalmologist as appropriate to the level of certification (i.e., COA, COT, or COMT).
• Obtain patient histories, perform prescription verification, and maintain patient records.
• Assist in testing patient vision. Test far and near acuity, peripheral vision, depth perception, and color perception.
• Examine the eye, using slit lamp, for abnormalities of cornea, and anterior and posterior chambers.
• Apply drops to anesthetize, dilate, or medicate eyes.
• Measure intraocular pressure of eyes (glaucoma test).
• Test field of vision, including central and peripheral vision, for defects, and chart test results on graph paper.
• Measure axial length of eye, using ultrasound equipment.
• Instruct patients concerning eye care and contact lens handling.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
* Education: Complete an ophthalmology technician or an optometric technician course, or at least two years of experience in ophthalmology to include assisting in surgery
* Experience: Minimum of one year of experience as an Ophthalmic Technician/Technologist after graduation.
* Clinical Certification/Training: COA, COT, or COMT, or completed a formal ophthalmic training program of the United States Armed Forces.
* Life Support Certification: Possess and maintain current AHA or ARC BLS Healthcare Provider certification.
* Security: Must possess ability to pass a Government background check/security clearance.
