Minimum Qualifications

Education
  • A high school diploma or possession of an equivalency certificate.

Experience

Twelve (12) months after an employee achieves a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), he/she shall advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed the required written or practical test(s), acquired the required certifications and has met the other requirements, including fitness for duty, work record and job performance requirements.

Level D
  • Two (2) years of experience in the structural repair, construction or a related field.
    • Or in lieu of experience, satisfactory completion of an accredited Trade school (concrete/masonry/steel erection/etc.) or training program in bridge and tunnel structural repair or a related field may be considered.

Level C
  • Three (3) years of experience in the structural repair or a related field, or have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Structural Repairer Level D.

Level B
  • Four (4) years of experience in the structural repair or a related field, or have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Structural Repairer Level C.

Level A
  • Five (5) years of experience in the structural repair or a related field, or have performed satisfactorily the duties of Structural Repairer Level B.

Level AA
  • Six (6) years of experience in the structural repair or a related field or have performed satisfactorily the duties of Structural Repairer Level A.

Level AAL
  • Seven (7) years of experience in the structural repair or a related field or have performed satisfactorily the duties of a Structural Repairer Level AA.

Certification/Licensure

Level D
  • Roadway Worker Protection Level 2 Certification and maintain during the duration of time in the job .

Level C
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or must be able to obtain their CDL within 60 days after being promoted to the "C" level. Also must maintain the valid CDL during the duration of time in the job.
  • Roadway Worker Protection Level 2 Certification and maintain during the duration of time in the job.

Level B
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or must be able to obtain their CDL within 60 days after being promoted to the "B" level. Also must maintain the valid CDL during the duration of time in the job..
  • Roadway Worker Protection Level 2 Certification and maintain during the duration of time in the job .

Level A
  • A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or must be able to obtain their CDL within 60 days after being promoted to the "A" level. Also must maintain the valid CDL during the duration of time in the job.

Level AA

Mission Essential Designation

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.

SUMMARY

The Structural Repairer performs skilled technical structures repair and maintenance work. An employee in this job is responsible for highly skilled maintenance, repair, troubleshooting and testing of bridges, aerials, tunnels and other Authority structures. The work requires an understanding of maintenance and repair procedures and practices, structural maintenance and repair theory and the materials, parts, tools, test equipment, and operating systems associated with WMATA structures. The employee is expected to utilize existing, established rule, regulations, and procedures in the performance of structure maintenance and repair.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Repairs, installs and performs scheduled, unscheduled, preventive or corrective maintenance on Authority's bridges, aerials, tunnels and other structures in accordance with WMATA Track and Structure standards, specific layout design plans, and engineer provided drawings and specifications.
  • Cleans bridge drains, decks, expansion joints, and road shoulders. Cleans catch basins, strips seal joints, decks, and sidewalks. Seals expansion joints on bridges, aprons, and curbing with appropriate materials.
  • Refinishes and repairs structural surfaces, installs, repairs, replaces and resurfaces concrete, strengthens weakened sections, paints structures, fixes leaks, and performs other structural related work.
  • Completes required documentation and reports related to the repair and maintenance of bridges, aerials, tunnels, and other Authority structures by using the proper forms and methods.
  • Sets up, operates, and works from scaffolding, ladders, and various other high reach equipment as required to perform assigned work. May perform work at heights exceeding 70 feet and in confined spaces.
  • Attends on-the-job and formal training classes; and assists individuals in higher level jobs with their assignments or provides job specific assistance to individuals in lower graded jobs.
  • Responds to and provides assistance during inclement weather events to include but not limited to snow and heavy rain/flooding emergencies and in emergencies which require repairs to bridges, aerials, tunnels, or other structures that are involved in incidents, accidents, or derailments.
  • Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and Maintenance guidelines.
  • Works variable shifts, days, and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union Collective Bargaining Agreements.

OTHER FUNCTIONS
  • May operate Authority Vehicles between work locations.
