Duties

  • Operates and maintains the Chemical Materiel Project (NSCMPs) and Mobile Munitions Assessment Systems (MMAS)
  • Travels to Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) and to various remote locations CONUS and OCONUS to conduct assessment operations.
  • Conducts assessment operations of RCWM, containers, cylinders, and glass vials to determine the contents using industrial XRAY systems, DRCT scanners, PINS, and RAMAN.
  • Responsible for establishing and implementing radiation safety practices in the field, ensuring that radiation safety guidelines are followed.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent to possess, obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
  • This position requires employee must pass screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment and subsequent periodic drug screening thereafter.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.
  • Incumbent must be able to comply with the provisions of Army Regulation 50-6, and able to maintain Chemical Surety PRP requirements.
  • Must obtain and maintain a State Issued Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Hazardous Material endorsement within 24 months of employment.
  • Emergency response and remediation activities.
  • Position is covered by the Lautenberg Amendment to the Gun Control Act of 1968.
  • Must be able to use OSHA personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • This is an EMERGENCY ESSENTIAL (E-E) position subject to deployment.
  • Temporary duty travel requires at least 50% both CONUS and OCONUS that may last up to six months at a time or longer.
  • Must obtain and maintain a Technical Transportation of Hazardous Materials (SMTP/AMMO6) certification within 24 months and Radiological Packaging Certification within 24 months.
  • Must obtain and maintain Portable Isotopic Neutron Spectroscopy (PINS) certification's within 12 months and Level II Radiographer certification within 24 months
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) with Hazardous Material Endorsement within 24 months of employment.
  • This position may require the employee to perform mission requirements in hostile environments.
  • Must be able to qualify with assigned weapon(s).
  • Ability to work outside, exposed to all weather conditions (e.g. foul weather, extreme hot and cold), and of unpredictable terrain or access.
  • Requires walking long distances, carrying objects (50 pounds or more), normal finger dexterity, normal color vision and crouching while wearing OSHA Level C Personnel Protective Ensemble (PPE) for extended periods of time.
  • Appointment to this position is subject to a one year probationary period unless the appointee has previously met the requirements as described in 5 CFR Part 315.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. GS-09 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.) establishing radiation safety practices 2.) Implementing radiation safety guidelines. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Chemistry, Hydrology, Engineering, and/or Geology.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages.

OR

GS-10 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1.) Utilizing Portable Isotopic Neutron Spectroscopy (PINS) gamma rays to identify the chemical elements within the munition/container; 2.) Certifying and transporting Hazardous Material during mission operations; 3.) Implement non-standard radiation equipment guidelines and standard operating procedures to ensure personnel safety. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

GS-11 Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes: 1) Operateshigh-resolution digital radiography and computed tomography (DRCT) systems to x-ray munitions; 2.) Conducts non-intrusive assessment operations of containers, cylinders, and glass vials to determine the contents using industrial X-Ray systems and Portable Isotopic Neutron Spectroscopy (PINS); 3.) Interprets and applies quality assurance checks on X-Rays and PINS data to ensure compliance with protocols.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent.
