Job Announcement
Fairfax County is the largest jurisdiction in the Commonwealth of Virginia with over 1.1 million people. This urbanizing county has a history of stable political leadership, effective citizen engagement, and outstanding service delivery. Fairfax County is seeking a Planner II to serve as a planner conducting land use and environmental analyses for development proposals to determine conformance with Comprehensive Plan policies and guidance, as well as providing support to planning studies and policy initiatives.
The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience in one or more of the following tasks:

In accordance with current Fairfax County telework and personnel policies, this position is eligible for partial telework. Telework enrollment and continuance are subject to supervisor approval and County policy.
Position may be underfilled as a Planner I; the underfill requirements are stated below in the Employment Standards section.

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university in a planning related field; plus two years of experience in a planning-related field.
UNDERFILL REQUIREMENTS:
This vacancy may be underfilled at the level of Planner I (S22, $56,957.47 - $94,929.54). The employment standards for the Planner I are:

Graduation from an accredited, four-year college or university in a planning related field.
BRIDGE CLASS EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS:
Four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. This class can serve as a bridge class enabling individuals who do not meet the educational or professional experience standards listed above to qualify for this class by possessing four years of increasingly complex technical experience in the assigned functional area, comparable to experience at the Planning Technician II, or higher, level. The purpose of this bridge class is to promote upward mobility within the Fairfax County workforce. However, persons qualifying for this class on the basis of their technical experience may not substitute this technical experience for education, or for professional experience, in order to qualify for other employment opportunities.

Upon completion of an underfill agreement (which will require that the employee meet the employment standards stated above in addition to obtaining competencies and licensures defined by the hiring agency) the employee will be elevated to the level o f Planner II .

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Position is primarily sedentary, however, employee may be required to do some walking, standing, bending and carrying of items under 15 pounds in weight. Work assignments may also require that the employee make site visits and inspections. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

Panel Interview and may include a practical exercise.

- Serving as a planner primarily conducting land use and environmental analyses for development proposals to determine conformance with Comprehensive Plan policies and guidance. Primary function would be development review which may include analysis of proposed land uses; identification of noise impacts and review of acoustical analyses; and identification of natural resources.
- Preparing a variety of written materials on specific zoning and planning studies.
- Providing reviews related to Comprehensive Plan guidance for right-of-way vacation letters; Interjurisdictional reviews; agricultural and forestal districts; and conservation easements.
- Supporting planning studies associated with concurrent development review applications.
- Providing support for meetings and presentations to the Board of Supervisors, Planning Commission, citizen groups, and Board authorities and commissions such as the Agricultural and Forestal District Advisory Committee.
- Providing support to staff that may represent the department on panels, committees, and task forces.
- Individual must be willing to participate in work assignments and meetings during the evening hours and respond to inquiries.
- Performing other duties as assigned.

- Professional experience in the planning and zoning fields.
