The Office to Prevent and End Homelessness (OPEH), a division of Fairfax County Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD), is searching for an experienced General Building Maintenance Worker to ensure the county’s homeless shelters, group homes, and other supportive housing are maintained in a high standard. This position, under the supervision of the Senior Maintenance Supervisor, will respond to daily work orders in various homes, involving general building maintenance from all trades - carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and painting. Ensures the lawns are mowed and raked/free from debris regularly and driveways and sidewalks free of snow in the winter. The Facility Maintenance Team is also responsible for preventive maintenance. No two days are ever the same—work order needs vary from general painting to drywall repair, to electrical repair, to plumbing needs. This position will be able to do it all. Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade; plus completion of an acceptable apprentice-level training program in a specific trade with two years of full performance-level experience in building maintenance, repair and/or construction trades work; or three years of full performance level experience in two or more skilled trades related to building maintenance and repair work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a pre-employment physical examination, and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

This position is considered "essential personnel" and will be required to report to work regardless of the emergency situation (weather, transportation, other disaster);

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Over three years’ experience in the following:
  • Repairing and installing residential plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems.
  • Using construction tools and equipment, as well as general carpentry, drywall installation and painting.
  • Working in occupied residential properties and interacting directly with clients.
  • Addressing work orders with a high level of competency and understanding about the population that is being served.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to walk, bend, reach over, pull, stand and use repetitive motion for an extended period of time. Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to drive a motor vehicle and operate machinery including pressure washer, lawn mower and line trimmer. Ability to work outdoors and in extreme temperatures and various weather conditions. Visual acuity is required to operate keyboard driven equipment. Ability to drive a motor vehicle and maintain a valid driver’s license; must be available to work scheduled off-hours and emergency overtime, as required; and must be able to work in all weather conditions. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
