Summary
The Civil Engineer (Highway) Safety assists in the promotion, coordination, implementation, and monitoring the various highway safety standards, regulations, and practices as they apply to roadside design, construction work zones, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). The incumbent promotes the development and implementation of innovative and state-of-the-art technologies, practices, and products to meet safety related needs and requirements.
Duties
As a Civil Engineer (Highway Safety), you will:
The ideal candidate will be experienced in promoting, coordinating, and implementing various safety policies, standards, and practices. The position is for a technically oriented employee who applies safety principles and practices to highway design, roadside design, and construction work zones. The candidate will possess excellent oral and written communication skills. The candidate will work as a positive and proactive member of the Federal Lands Highway Safety Team and shares the workload of Federal Lands Highway-wide safety activities.

A. Degree: Engineering. Combination of education or training: college level education, training and/or technical experience that has furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering.

Duties
As a Civil Engineer (Highway Safety), you will:
- Provide early safety consideration in the planning, design, and construction phases of highway projects.
- Provide expert technical guidance and training on highway safety appurtenances and roadside design, and promote state-of-the art installations on highway projects.
- Monitor and oversee work zone safety.
- Evaluate safety for special projects and sites, including investigations at high crash locations.
- Prepare reports with recommendations and benefit-cost or risk-based solutions, such as Road Safety Audits and safety assessments.
- Use results of studies to develop methods for resolving safety problems during the design and construction of highways.

- Written Test - Evidence of having successfully passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination, or any other written test required for professional registration by an engineering licensure board in the various States, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico.
- Specified academic courses - Successful completion of at least 60 semester hours of courses in the physical, mathematical, and engineering sciences which included the courses as specified in Paragraph A above.
- Related curriculum - Successful completion of a curriculum leading to a bachelor's degree in an appropriate scientific field, e.g., engineering technology, physics, chemistry, architecture, computer science, mathematics, hydrology, or geology, may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor's degree in engineering, provided the applicant had at least 1 year of professional engineering experience acquired under professional engineering supervision and guidance. There should be either an established plan of intensive training to develop professional engineering competence, or several years of prior professional engineering type experience. This must be clearly described in your resume.

- Experience utilizing various methods and guides such as highway safety appurtenances, roadside design practices, work zone safety, the MUTCD, the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide, the AASHTO Greenbook, the Older Driver Highway Design Handbook, the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH), and the NCHRP Report 350 as they relate to highway engineering and traffic engineering.
