Minimum Qualifications :
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate, and satisfactory completion of an acceptable training program in track maintenance, heavy equipment operation or a related field is required.
Considerable knowledge of and have performed satisfactorily the duties of a track repairer or heavy equipment operator or related field for a period of not less than two (2) years.
License:
Possession of a valid District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia motor vehicle operator's license issued from jurisdiction of residence. Safe driving record with no more than four (4) points accumulated over the past three (3) years.
Medical Group:
Ability to satisfactorily complete the medical examination for this job.
Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks including frequent lifting of object weighing up to 50 pounds and occasionally to 100 pounds.
Ability to distinguish basic colors for safety identification.

In accordance with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's Continuity of Operations Plan (COOP) this job has been identified as critical to mission essential functions. Incumbents in this role may be required to report to or continue to work in the event of authorized office closings or service suspensions due to severe weather, natural disaster, fire, operational emergencies or related events.
Job Summary/Duties :
This is skilled track equipment operations work. An employee in this job is responsible for operating various pieces of heavy equipment and performing related skilled and unskilled labor tasks such as removing, repairing, installing, lifting, loading and unloading various track and structure parts and appliances. The work requires an understanding of WMATA maintenance procedures and practices, maintenance theory, the materials, parts, tools, equipment and operating systems associated with WMATA track equipment, track and structures and repair facilities.
Employees are assigned elementary track and structure maintenance and repair work utilizing on and off track heavy equipment in subways, on aerials and on ballasted track sections. Employees are expected to gain familiarity with and develop skills for track and structures repair utilizing on and off track heavy equipment. All important aspects of the work are subject to detailed and specific procedures which the employee follows closely. Employees receive instruction and close supervision on new assignments, while regular assignments are performed independently. Work is reviewed and verified upon completion to check progress and conformance to established policies and requirements by an assigned TRST Supervisor or Leadman.
Performs lifting, loading, unloading, removing, repairing, installing and other related duties while operating on and off track heavy equipment in accordance with WMATA track standards, specific layout and design plans, standard A.R.E.A. specifications and WMATA operating procedures.
Performs preventive, scheduled, unscheduled or corrective maintenance in subways, on aerials, and on ballasted track sections using on and off track heavy equipment such as Pettibone and Swingmaster with attachments, tie handlers, tie inserters, tamping machines, prime movers, locomotives, 20 ton crane, rail grinder and other Authority equipment.
Completes required documentation and reports for the repair and maintenance of Pettibone and Swingmaster speedswings, tie handlers, tie inserters, tamping machines, prime movers, locomotives, 20 ton crane, rail grinder and other on and off track heavy equipment by using the proper forms, tags, or daily activity records: prepares requisitions for parts from supply storerooms.
Sets up and works from specialized equipment as required in assigned work.
Attends on the job and formal training classes; assists individuals in higher job levels in their assignments and provides job specific training in lower job levels.
Maintains and may make minor repairs on track equipment as required.
Responds to and provides assistance in emergencies (incidents, accidents or derailments) which require repairs to track or structures or during snow removal emergencies, etc.
Performs all tasks and assignments within the established safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
May operate Authority vehicles between work locations.
Works variable shifts, days and hours as required and as provided for under existing Union contract.
Performs all other related duties as required.
