Equipment Operator I
Street Maintenance Program
An Overview
Performs semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work in the street maintenance section of the city. Operates medium to heavy maintenance equipment such as dump trucks, skip loaders, front-end loaders, motor grader, street sweepers, rollers, and other equipment in support of street division, along with various general maintenance and repair of streets and equipment. The incumbent must be available during emergency events including but not limited to winter storms, hurricanes, coastal storms etc. Work is performed under general supervision of the Assistant Superintendent.

Minimum & Additional Requirements
To qualify for this position, all candidates must possess a High School Diploma or GED; one (1) year of experience in the operation of maintenance and/or construction equipment; good knowledge of Public Works operations and procedures; some vocational training as related to construction/maintenance field; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Ability to perform heavy manual labor in all types of weather; must have a valid Commercial Driver’s license.
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to be physically able, on a daily basis, to bend, walk, occasionally lift and carry up to 80 lbs. Operate vehicles, equipment and tools in a safe and efficient manner.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations as necessitated by work assignments.
Preparing and maintaining records and logs.

The Opportunity
- Assists with accomplishing tasks related to roadway maintenance including the use of a dump trucks, pothole equipment, crack seal equipment, front-end loaders, bobcats/skid steers, asphalt hot pots, CDL trucks, rollers, and various other types of equipment.
- Assists in accomplishing tasks related to traffic control signage and marking including flagging in accordance with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Device.
- Hauls equipment, as directed, to support the tasks related to roadway maintenance, right-of-way maintenance, vegetative maintenance, and traffic control signage and marking.
- Identify needs for assigned projects.
- Respond to public inquiries in a courteous manner. Provide information within area of assignment and resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
- Operate street sweeper; clean and maintain roadways; clean storm drains; and remove ice and snow from roadways during winter storms.
- Must be able to demonstrate the application and use of assigned crew tools, equipment, and vehicles in an effective and safe manner; conducts preventive maintenance to ensure proper working order.
- Performs emergency street, snow, storm drain, or other public service maintenance work as required.
- Operates a snowplow with a salt spreader, also shovels snow when not operating heavy trucks.
- Performs related work as required.
