Job Summary:

The International Food Policy Research Institute seeks a Communications Manager for the HarvestPlus Program. The successful candidate will be creative, inspiring, and motivated to tell our compelling story broadly. The Communications Manager will expand HarvestPlus’ visibility and prestige as the leader of the global biofortification movement aimed at improving the lives of families and children. S/he will oversee external and internal strategic communications and supervise a team of specialists in editorial, design, and social media communications. This is a 50% part time, one-year, renewable appointment based at IFPRI headquarters in Washington, D.C.  This is a part-time position and will not be eligible for IFPRI’s benefits package except for minimum sick leave accrual per state regulations.

Background:

HarvestPlus is the global leader in improving nutrition and public health by developing and promoting biofortified food crops that are rich in vitamins and minerals. Biofortification and HarvestPlus have received global recognition with the 2016 World Food Prize; TIME’s Top 25 Innovations of 2016; and as a finalist in the MacArthur Foundation’s 100&Change competition in 2017. HarvestPlus is part of the CGIAR and is based at the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), a CGIAR research center. CGIAR is a global agriculture research partnership for a food secure future. Its’ science is carried out by its 15 research centers in collaboration with hundreds of partner organizations.

Reporting to the CEO, the Communications Manager will work with HarvestPlus and country teams to deliver a full suite of communications, publications, advocacy, fundraising, and global marketing requirements. S/he will execute a global communications strategy to enhance the visibility of HarvestPlus as a global leader in tackling hidden hunger, while leading a team of three direct reports, and drawing on the expertise in HarvestPlus’ country offices globally.

Essential Duties:

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  •  Coordinate, develop and implement an effective and innovative global communications strategy to enhance the profile of HarvestPlus with media, policy-makers, implementing agencies, donors, and the public and tell the story of its essential work in biofortification.
  • Ensure a broad, innovative, and dynamic digital social media and online presence.
  • Coordinate and produce a regular pipeline of new and consistent information (stories, article links, and events) to maintain the HarvestPlus website and social media channels.
  • Manage the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to annual report, informational and technical briefs, flagship publications, ensuring that they are written, produced, disseminated, and promoted to the highest standards.
  • Oversee the execution of major events, in coordination with other teams, including international biofortification meetings.
  • Manage and supervise HarvestPlus communications team of three staff; engage global country-level staff in a functional communications team.
  • Support, advise, and encourage all Country Programs and major project managers with their communications requirements; work with HarvestPlus units, country offices, implementing and CGIAR partners to define, develop, and coordinate joint project, initiative, and country and region-specific communications products, as required.
  • Provide guidance on the position of HarvestPlus including its overall narrative as well as management of potentially controversial issues.
  • Monitor public and policy-maker opinions and trends relevant to HarvestPlus and adapt communications in response.
  • Design and implement metrics and targets to ensure cost-effective and measurable outcomes.
  • Represent HarvestPlus periodically at various meetings and events as appropriate.
  • Supervise writers, consultants, and vendors; and other duties, as required.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, international development, or related fields plus ten years of relevant professional experience or a Master’s degree in the fields above plus seven years of relevant professional experience
  • 2 years of demonstrable success and experience in leading and managing a communications function.
  • Demonstrable success and experience managing a multi-cultural team of communications staff in dispersed or diverse areas.
  • Significant and demonstrated understanding of the international development context.
  • Demonstrated writing and editing experience in a global context.
  • Experience in website management and oversight.
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally, including to developing countries.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in agriculture, nutrition sciences, or public health.
  • International experience, especially in South Asia or Africa.
  • Fluency in French or Spanish.

 Physical Demand & Work Environment:

  • Employee will sit in an upright position for a long period of time.
  • Employee will lift between 0-10 pounds.
  • Employee is required to have close visual acuity to perform activities such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing computer terminal; extensive reading.  

IFPRI Washington D.C has a hybrid work environment that allows staff members a minimum of two days in-office work and three days remote work.
