Classification & Compensation SpecialistThe George Mason University Human Resources Department invites applications for a Classification & Compensation Specialist opportunity. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.GMU Classification & Compensation:The Classification & Compensation team works to support the University mission through the development and implementation of policies, programs and practices that attract, compensate, retain and reward faculty and staff.About the Position:This position serves as member of the Classification and Compensation (C&C) Team, providing guidance and support for the implementation, communication, and administration of Mason compensation programs, policies and practices. With limited guidance and direction, performs activities supporting the development of effective and inclusive position descriptions and job advertisements, conducts market research, and makes recommendations consistent with George Mason University's compensation philosophy, established policies, and business needs. This position interfaces with individuals at varying levels of the organization to provide consultation.Responsibilities:Provides day-to-day consultative services and support to HR staff, liaisons, and managers by providing appropriate, accurate and timely guidance on classification and compensation related matters, and encouraging and facilitating open communication between the Human Resources Department and Mason units;Reviews position descriptions for new positions, revisions to existing positions, and other actions to determine appropriate classification, compensation, and FLSA status; partners with Mason units to ensure the nature of the role is captured and clearly defined, providing appropriate recommendations and guidance;Collaborates with other C&C team members to conduct organizational assessments at the request of department leaders, and provides recommendations to achieve unit goals;Confers with Mason unit liaisons, managers, and other stakeholders to make sound recommendations consistent with university policy using classification factors, internal and external comparisons, and salary survey data; ensuring all actions are in accordance with State and Federal laws as well as University policies and practices. Ensures appropriate and thorough documentation is properly maintained;Collaborates with C&C team members and other HR colleagues to develop and administer trainings related to classification and compensation matters; andMay provide support in other areas of human resources as needed.Required Qualifications:EducationBachelor's Degree in a related field, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.ExperienceRelated Human Resource experience in position description development, classification and compensation, and/or talent acquisition.Knowledge, Skills, & AbilitiesKnowledge of HR principles and practices including applicable federal/state laws/regulations governing compensation and employment;Knowledge of how to develop and administer effective presentations and trainings to audiences in varying functional areas and levels across an organization;Skill in collaboration and providing effective consultation;Skill in critical thinking; ability to synthesize and assess relevant information;Skill in providing effective customer service;Skill in the use of computers and related software, including Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft Teams;Skill in effective and respectful verbal, written, and interpersonal communication; ability to concisely report solutions to internal and external contacts; ability to demonstrate tact and diplomacy when communicating with individuals at all levels of the organization;Ability to exercise integrity and maintain confidentiality in working with sensitive information;Ability to effectively interpret and apply policies and procedures, exercise sound judgment, and make reasonable, logical and defensible decisions;Ability to work effectively with others both in the department and to external colleagues, and to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team environment;Ability to demonstrate significant attention to detail and perform work with a high degree of accuracy; andAbility to multi-task and prioritize daily activities; remain organized while working on multiple, simultaneous projects.Preferred Qualifications:Considerable related experience with exposure to a variety of related Human Resource specialty areas;Direct experience providing HR-related guidance and consultation to varying levels of an organization;Experience providing HR-related presentations and trainings to audiences in varying functional areas and levels across an organization;Experience evaluating and classifying positions in a formal classification system; experience with market-based compensation systems;Progressive HR experience in a higher education or large public employer;Knowledge of market/merit compensation practices;Proficiency in the use of Excel, including creation and use of pivot tables, basic calculations, VLOOKUPs, and compiling, organizing and analyzing multiple data sets; andHR related certification, such as PHR, SHRM-CP or CCP.
