School of Nursing - ECOP Lead Peer Recovery Specialist [100% Grant Funded position]The George Mason University's College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) seeks an energetic Lead Peer Recovery Specialist. The College is home to more than 1,900 undergraduate and 1,300 graduate students and approximately 120 faculty and staff. With the recent launch of its PhD in public health degree offered with 2 concentrations, the College has accomplished several key milestones necessary to becoming the first college of public health in the Commonwealth of Virginia. As part of these efforts, CHHS remains committed to transdisciplinary research and inter-professional practice leveraging the notable health disciplines comprising the College.About the Project:The George Mason University School of Nursing has received a grant from the Virginia Department of Health and will manage the "Empowered Communities Opioid Project", or ECOP. The Empowered Community Opioid Project (ECOP) utilizes principles from care coordination, case management, and population health to maximize health outcomes and resource utilization for populations and the individuals within them. This targeted approach is a hub-and-spoke community model of care which arranges clinical service delivery assets into a network consisting of an anchor establishment (hub) which offers a full array of clinical support services, and secondary communities (spokes), routing patients needing more intensive services to the hub for treatment. Additionally, it uses active cross-sector system collaborations with criminal justice, behavioral health, and medical teams to optimize resources.About the Position:The Lead Peer Recovery Specialist is an active member of the ECOP team. As a lead peer navigator, this role is vitally important in forming a strong bond between participants and community partners (CSB, jail, others). The Lead Peer Recovery Specialist serves on the SPOKE Prince William Community team. This role provides a continuation of assistance in building recovery community models for cross-sector collaboration, engagement, and mentorship of the ECOP model and coordination for quick access to MAT/MOUD Bridges for rapidly released individuals who are involved in the carceral and legal systems.Preferred personal attributes for this role include, but are not limited to:Disclosure of recovery experiences;Ability to build rapport and listen actively;Ability to role model recovery;Ability to type and enter data;Ability to enter notes timely into an electronic health record;Ability to maintain professional boundaries;Comfortable using your own recovery journey to help others connect to services;Ability to use own lived experience with addiction and justice-involvement to help others access care and reintegrate after incarceration;Ability to serve as a role model for recovery, wellness, and self-advocacy; andAbility to maintain confidentiality.Responsibilities:The Lead Peer Recovery Specialist has authority to carry out major assignments in conducting the operations of ECOP, such as recruitment, determining participant eligibility, consenting, and developing intervention activity plans. In collaboration with the supervisor, the Lead Peer Recovery Specialist will set performance objectives.Engage with incarcerated persons who have an opioid use disorder to explain ECOP;Provide resource ideas for ineligible individuals;Complete intake process with eligible participants;Provide information on available resources for individuals with a history of opioid misuse;Build relationships with local agencies, advocating for participants. Assist individuals and communities to adopt healthy behaviors and social networks;Collaborate with partner peer for continued peer recovery support and coordination;Coordinate rapid connection to MAT/MOUD bridges for ECOP participants at the SPOKE Prince William community site;Ensure continued connection to MAT/MOUD provider post-initiation. Support continued care until stabilized (e.g., Medicaid in place or established in community site);Participate on integrated care team but not responsible for care plan;Document participant interactions and resource connectivity;Administer benchmark surveys; andCollect data to help identify social and community health needs and gaps.Required Qualifications:High School diploma or GED;Within six (6) months of hire, completion of Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) certification;Lived experience of and in stable recovery from a substance use disorder with at least two years of sobriety, or experience with a family member with lived experience of a substance use disorder;Completion of Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) 72-hour peer recovery specialist curriculum;Reliable transportation to meet participants and partners within the Prince William Health District;Ability to meet volunteer criteria at the Prince William-Manassas Adult Detention Center; andProficient in the use of Microsoft Office, Excel, Outlook, and Zoom.Preferred Qualifications:Bi-lingual (Spanish) speaking;Experience in wraparound intervention as a peer specialist; andCollaboration on an integrated team with behavioral health, medical, or justice system partners.
