Chemistry Instrument Specialist The George Mason University Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, within in the College of Science, invites well-qualified applicants to apply for our Chemistry Instrument Specialist position. In addition, we provide the educational background necessary for chemistry majors to hold professional positions and successfully compete in any graduate program in the nation. These objectives require the cooperation of all staff and faculty in the department.Responsibilities:The primary purposes of this position are: (1) to support the teaching of laboratory classes by setting up the instrumentation for each experiment and making sure that it is in working condition, (2) training individuals using the equipment, (3) repairing or supervising the repair of inoperable equipment, (4) maintaining research instrumentation in the department, and (5) interfacing with faculty and vendors regarding instructional/research instrumentation purchases. Teaching and research labs are located on the main campus (Fairfax), the SciTech campus (Manassas) and at Potomac Science Center (Woodbridge).Required Qualifications: Extensive experience in the use of chemical instrumentation to make measurements;Knowledge in how to prepare solutions properly for chemical analysis;Extensive experience with the maintenance and upkeep of instrumentation, especially FTIR, GC-MS, NMR;Familiarity with SEM and electron microscopy techniques; TGA/DSC;Experience in single crystal XRD and PXRD, BET, SEM/TEM, Raman;Knowledge of electronics and how to find defective parts in an electrical circuit;Knowledge of lab design and ability to read blueprints;Knowledge in the use of computers in the laboratory and in the office;Ability to teach theory of research instrumentation and train research students on proper use of research grade instrumentation;Ability to diagnose and solve problems with the minimum amount of supervision;Ability to work collaboratively with the faculty and staff to complete an assigned task;Ability to complete projects in a timely manner with the minimum amount of supervision;Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and meet deadlines;Ability to interact well with faculty and students, and a strong desire to assist them; andAbility to communicate well with people from diverse backgrounds.Preferred Qualifications:M.S. degree in electronics, physics, chemistry or a related field (or a combination of education and experience);Some experience in an academic unit within a higher education environment;Experience in the use of chemical instrumentation to make measurements;Experience with the maintenance and upkeep of instrumentation, especially for spectroscopy, microscopy and diffraction analysis;Knowledge of electronics and troubleshooting in an electrical circuit; andFamiliarity with computer networks and databases.
