Center for Climate Change CommunicationClimate Communication Research-to-Practice (RTP) Postdoctoral FellowshipThe Center for Climate Change Communication (4C) at George Mason University seeks to hire a highly motivated and talented full-time postdoctoral research fellow to join our team in Fall 2023. The candidate will participate in a research-to-practice (RTP) mentoring program at our center, where fellows conduct applied research and work with practitioner organizations to apply evidence-based climate communication strategies. Fellows will also engage in research and teaching activities with graduate and undergraduate students.Mason 4C is a "think and do" tank that conducts cutting-edge social science research and builds partnerships with external organizations to apply our findings for the benefit of humanity, biodiversity, and our climate-and to advance equity. Mason 4C also runs several initiatives designed to enhance the public engagement efforts of journalists and television weathercasters (Climate Matters), health professionals (Medical Society Consortium on Climate and Health), and conservatives (republicEn) who care about climate change. Postdoctoral fellows will produce research and scholarship that can be applied by Mason 4C programs and other communities of practice in climate communication. The fellow will gain significant professional experience collaborating with members of these program teams.George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.Responsibilities:Conduct scientific research to advance the theory and practice of effective climate change communication, and the psychological, cultural, political, and social factors influencing public awareness, risk perceptions, policy preferences and behavior;Designing and implementing studies, analyzing data, and authoring peer-reviewed publications and public reports;Contribute to survey research and experimental design, implementation, data analysis and data management;Collaborating with an interdisciplinary and international network of researchers;Communicating research findings to a variety of audiences, including academic peers, practitioners, and the general public;Sharing research insights with Mason 4C programs to benefit their climate communication and public engagement efforts;Mentoring and training graduate and undergraduate students in research methods and techniques; andParticipating in grant proposal writing and other fundraising efforts to support the research program.Required Qualifications:Candidates must have a PhD in a relevant social science field or discipline, such as communication (climate change, science, environment, public health, and/or political communication), psychology, political science, sociology, or geography;Proficiency in survey and experimental research design, methods, and analysis;Excellent written and verbal communication skills;Ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary team environment; andDemonstrated organizational skills and attention to detail.Preferred Qualifications:Candidates with additional experience in one or more of the following methodologies is desired: semi-structured interviews, field experiments with elites/policymakers, machine learning/automated content analysis, social network analysis or other methodologies that integrate social media data with survey data.Proficiency in data analysis, using SPSS, R, or other statistics packages;Proficiency in data and project management;Experience and ability to communicate complex research findings to both academic and non-academic audiences;Teaching experience at the collegiate level;Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks simultaneously; andExperience in grant proposal writing and other fundraising efforts is desirable.Funding: Postdocs will receive an annual salary of $70,000. A $15,000 research and professional development stipend will be awarded to support: research costs, conference/travel fees, training, equipment, and publishing fees.The postdoctoral researcher will join a vibrant and supportive research community at George Mason University and will have access to a range of resources and support services. This is a full-time, 12-month position with the possibility of renewal for an additional year, depending on funding availability and performance.
