Candidates who qualify for a higher rank will also be considered. In addition to an academic appointment in the Department of Mathematical Sciences, the successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary unit that consists of full-time faculty from Biology, Physics & Astronomy, Forensic Science, Geology, and Chemistry in the COS STEM Accelerator.During the academic year, the incumbent will teach a variety of courses within the Mathematical Sciences Department. The incumbent will also work on STEM Accelerator programs and help to develop, implement, and run ongoing and new innovative programs. Academic year STEM duties include mentoring undergraduate Learning Assistants (LAs) as well as coordinating all Mathematics LAs and the faculty who are working with them. The COS STEM Accelerator portion of this position will not exceed a half-time assignment during the academic year.During the summer months, this position is wholly dedicated to the COS STEM Accelerator Program. Summer STEM activities include, but are not limited to, boot camps for majors and STEM summer bridge camps.Required Qualifications:Successfully completed a Ph.D. or equivalent degree in mathematical sciences, mathematics education or a closely related field;All candidates must have 18 credit hours of graduate level mathematics to qualify for the position. Teaching experience at the college/university level; andAbility to coordinate STEM education programs.Preferred Qualifications:Experience with grant writing and administration;Demonstrated experience and interest in inquiry-based learning, active learning, and/or other interactive classroom instructional models;Research or pedagogical experience in critical, feminist, or rehumanizing approaches to teaching and learning; andApplicants willing to conduct research involving undergraduates are encouraged to apply, but conducting research is not a requirement of the position.About The Department:The Mathematical Sciences Department offers undergraduate, Master's, and Ph.D. programs in pure, applied, and computational mathematics, as well as the first actuarial program in the state of Virginia. We are involved in campus-wide initiatives in data science and have strong connections with other science and engineering departments. High-quality teaching and community engagement is achieved through innovative strategies including extensive outreach work, active learning, hands-on undergraduate research, and graduate internships; with a high success rate among both undergraduate and graduate students.
