With special attention to transition and the first-year experience, the New Student and Family Programs office provides innovative programs and services that facilitate the social and academic acclimation process for George Mason University students and their families.About the Position:Reporting to the Associate Director of Family Programs, the Assistant Director facilitates the coordination, implementation, and evaluation of the department's family programming, outreach, and communication. Additionally, the Assistant Director assists with the program development and implementation of Orientation and other programs and initiatives serving the office's mission.The position is comprised of five main components:(1) Coordinate and implement signature family programs logistics for Family Weekend, Spring Family Fling, and Family Orientation;(2) Oversee and create communication content and plans for family programs, manage virtual outreach opportunities to engage families from a distance, and coordinate the creation and dissemination of family survey content and program micro-assessments;(3) Contribute to the development of a NSFP philosophy on intern and student coordinator development, and co-supervise, select, train, and evaluate student employees;(4) Support the planning and implementation of other unit initiatives such as selection and training, student projects, unit events, and team procedures and assessment; and(5) Demonstrate commitment to NSFP and GMU through committee involvement and project development connected to transition as well as personal/professional goals.The position also supports and provides leadership for various programs and functions of the unit. As an integral member of the NSFP team, the Assistant Director provides support for a wide range of division initiatives and serves as an active ambassador for the George Mason community.Responsibilities:1. Coordinate and implement signature family programs logistics for Family Weekend, Spring Family Fling, and Family Orientation. Assist in the development of Family Weekend annually. Plan and implement Spring Family Fling annually. Assist in the coordination and implementation of Family Orientation annually. Collaborate with key stakeholders/partners to develop family-based activities at campus signature programs including but not limited to Move-In Day and Commencement. Develop relationships with local vendors and campus stakeholders for programs, including Move-In, Family Weekend, Spring Family Fling, Commencement, and Family Orientation. 2. Oversee and create communication content and plans for family programs, including event emails and signage, newsletter posts, and internal processes and trainings; Manage virtual outreach opportunities to engage families from a distance; Coordinate the creation and dissemination of family survey content and program micro-assessments.a. Manage communication and delivery of information for Family Orientation, Family Weekend, and Spring Family Fling;b. Manage and update all content and virtual outreach opportunities to engage families including but not limited to the Family Support Series, Mason Family Connection, websites, etc.;c. Develop targeted outreach and programming for families of key special populations including but not limited to first generation, off campus, out-of-state, etc.;d. Incorporate micro-assessments into the Family Support Series and during Family Orientation; ande. Consult on the development and management of post-event surveys for Family Orientation, Family Weekend, and Spring Family Fling. Assist in the development and implementation of the end-of-semester family surveys.3. Contribute to the development of a NSFP philosophy on intern and student coordinator development. Co-supervise, select, train, and evaluate student (graduate and/or undergraduate) employees (4-6 individuals).a. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate Graduate Assistant for Family Programs;b. Select, train, and supervise the Family NODA Summer Intern;c. Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate the Family Programs student coordinator team;d. Supervise additional undergraduate and graduate staff at the discretion of the Associate Director/Director; ande. Participate in the training and development of the NSFP student leader teams, as appropriate.4. Support the planning and implementation of other unit initiatives such as selection and training, student projects, unit events, and team procedures and assessment.a. Provide support for additional departmental programming initiatives, including extended orientation (Quill Camp), new student programming (Welcome2Mason/Preamble), Student Leader Trainings, and other initiatives as appropriate;b. Support additional student-led programs within the unit as identified; andc. Contribute to unit-driven initiatives such as assessment, student leader experience, appreciation and morale, etc. 5. Demonstrate commitment to NSFP and GMU through committee involvement and project development connected to transition as well as personal/professional goals. Serve on university committees and other tasks identified by Associate Director/Director and/or UL Leadership. Attend professional meetings and maintain active membership in salient professional organizations.Required Qualifications & Experience:Advanced Degree (Masters) and or any combination of relevant education and experience equivalent to an advanced degree;Demonstrated working knowledge of new student and family programs; student and family transitional issues; student leadership and training development; mentoring and advising of student leaders;Must have experience designing, developing, and executing large-scale programming initiatives;Exceptional interpersonal, oral and written communication skills;Must demonstrate experience designing and executing large-scale program assessment and be able to analyze data to create meaningful reports;Highly developed organizational management and problem-solving skills and must work accurately and efficiently in order to meet a multitude of deadlines and responsibilities;Demonstrated leadership abilities;Must have a commitment to diversity and be comfortable working within diverse populations;Ability to learn in a fast-paced environment;Be able to manage conflicting and competing situations; andFlexibility to work evening hours and weekends, particularly during summer months, is a position requirement.Preferred Qualifications & Experience:Degree preference in higher education, student personnel, counseling or a related field;Full-time professional experience in a higher education environment, typically obtained in 1+ year(s);Experience supervising graduate and undergraduate student staff; andDemonstrated commitment to customer service."
