Director of Studies and Senior Research Scientist, Government ContractingThe George Mason University, School of Business invites applications for the position of Director of Studies and Senior Research Scientist, Baroni Center for Government Contracting. The Director of Studies and Senior Research Scientist is responsible for the strategic planning and execution of Center research projects in conjunction with the Executive Director of the Baroni Center for Government Contracting. The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of the Center's research portfolio: working with the Executive Director and staff to develop research ideas for pursuit by the Center, pursuing grant and proposal efforts to grow the Center's research portfolio, organizing and overseeing study teams to execute Center research projects, and building the Center's research reputation across the government contracting community. The incumbent will also be responsible for helping the center reach goals by conducting research and writing, development of programs, offerings and grants, and completing special projects. This is a full-time research staff position with full benefits. This initial appointment will be for 3 years with a potential opportunity for renewal. The school is evolving to become more interdisciplinary, more connected, and more diverse.Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:Supervisory:Supervision, development, and mentoring of the Baroni Center for Government Contracting research managers, research scientists and graduate research assistants (GRAs);Responsible for setting goals for performance and deadlines in ways that comply with the university's plans and vision and communicate them to subordinates;Organizing workflow and ensuring that employees understand their duties or delegated tasks;Monitoring employee productivity and providing constructive feedback and coaching;Receiving complaints and resolving problems;Maintaining timekeeping and personnel records;Passing on information from upper management to employees and vice versa;Preparing and submitting performance evaluations;Deciding on rewards and promotions based on performance;Hiring and training new employees; andEnsuring adherence to legal and university policies and procedures and undertaking disciplinary actions if the need arises.Leadership:Develop and lead the execution of the Center's research portfolio of studies, reports, white papers, and commentary pieces;Leading business development and proposal efforts to garner research awards and grants from U.S. government agencies, foundations, and corporations to grow the Center's research portfolio;Work directly with the Executive Director to develop and execute plans to deploy funds from the $7 million naming gift from Greg and Camille Baroni to support the Center's research growth and expansion; andWork closely with research staff to ensure effective manning of Center research efforts.Research:Conduct research and write on mutually agreed upon government contracting areas;Complete at least 4 research briefs of 5-10 pages, as well as at least one 800-word commentary piece that share research findings and are suitable for publication;Conduct compelling public presentations of research at events and conferences as well as a willingness to participate in media events and communications representing the Baroni Center; andCollaborate with faculty in support of related research efforts such as case studies.Required Qualifications:Master's degree in Business, Economics, Public Policy, or a related field;Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form;Skills in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative approaches and solutions to problems;Mastery in collecting and analyzing complex data;Ability to plan, implement, and evaluate programs;Ability to effectively plan, assign, and supervise the work of others;Ability to analyze, organize, and prioritize work while meeting multiple deadlines;Demonstrated experience excellence leading and publishing research studies;Experience and a successful track record of building positive relationships with government officials and business executives; andExperience producing targeted research to help build Center reputation and reach goals.Preferred Qualifications:PhD in Business, Economics, Public Policy, or a related field;Skills in monitoring/assessing the performance of others to make improvements or take corrective action;Knowledge of non-profit and educational industries; andExperience working in non-profit and education industries.
