Senior International Officer and Executive Director of Study AbroadThe George Mason University, Office of Academic Affairs invites applications for a Senior International Officer and Executive Director of Study Abroad position. George Mason University has a strong institutional commitment to the achievement of excellence and diversity among its faculty and staff, and strongly encourages candidates to apply who will enrich Mason's academic and culturally inclusive environment.About the Position:The Senior International Officer and Executive Director of Study Abroad (SIO) position reports to the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs and has responsibility for collaborating with other Mason leaders to advance the internationalization efforts of the university. The SIO's goals focus on four major aspects of Mason's global engagement: 1) facilitate and coordinate with program directors, deans and support office leadership in international research and outreach programs and partnerships; 2) oversee study abroad, international student exchanges and global community and outreach activities; 3) work with the colleges and academic departments to develop international study opportunities and curricula that integrate with and strengthen the academic programs; and 4) coordinate with international student and program services to advocate for international programs on campus and grow Mason's global presence.The SIO has the primary responsibility for promoting and expanding authentic student, faculty, and staff global experiences. Significant experience in the development and administration of study abroad programs, facility in curriculum development for international programming, ability to build international partnerships, success in working across academic units in a decentralized structure, and knowledge of emerging trends in the field of global education and learning are all important aspects of this position.Responsibilities:Assist the Vice Provost, in collaboration with the Office of the President, in strategically creating and leading innovative global initiatives that support Mason's Strategic Plan and aligning them with the academic units;Work in partnership with the Admission Office, Enrollment Management, University Life, and the Graduate Division to ensure the successful recruitment and retention of international undergraduate and graduate students;Provide oversight and supervision for the Global Education Office and coordinated leadership for orientation and International Partnerships offices;Help coordinate international campus initiatives related to study abroad, faculty led programs, virtual exchange initiatives, international student and scholar services, national and international exchange programs, international student orientation, pre-departure and post-departure cultural programs, Fulbright programs, etc.;In collaboration with the University's Risk Management Office, develop, review, and ensure compliance with international risk management policies and procedures;Collaborate with faculty within the University to enhance the internationalization of academic programs;Provide university-wide support/training for faculty and staff who are currently engaged in, or wish to set up, international educational and outreach programs;Develop, implement, and expand the University's international programming and events (e.g., International Education Week), collaborating with the Office of International Programs and Services;Develop and institute culturally responsive protocols for international visitors and host international visitors;Work with the Global Assembly and the supporting committees to prioritize the University's global strategic goals and provide guidance on global education, programs and partnerships;Develop and institute effective communication strategies regarding global initiatives and opportunities to internal and external stakeholders, including updating and maintaining web and other electronic communications;Assess and report on the quality and impact of global programs;Develop and maintain a database and repository of global initiatives and programs;Serve as a University representative to relevant national organizations and as a university liaison with professional colleagues in other US colleges and universities. Be knowledgeable of AIEA's Standards of Professional Practice;Administer the budget and oversee the financial aspects of the global education office; andActively seek new opportunities and identify new sources of external funding for expanding and developing new initiatives that support the global strategy.Required Qualifications:Master's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience;Considerable full-time experience (generally 5+ years) in management/ administrative experience in higher education, international education, or executive education programs including experience working with international program development, compliance, supervision and evaluation, and budgeting; andEffective communication and interpersonal skills.Preferred Qualifications:PhD degree; andExperience living, working, and/or studying abroad preferred.
