Our two units are collaborating on this hire based on the belief that training students in environmental history will provide them with unique insights into present-day social and political conflicts. Through the development of cutting-edge theory, research, education, and practical work, the Carter School seeks to identify and address the underlying causes of conflict and provide tools for ethical and just peacebuilding and conflict resolution on local, national and global stages.About the Position:While this position is situated within the History and Art History Department and the Carter School for Peace and Conflict Resolution, the successful candidate will be well positioned to contributed to the work of many other programs and centers at Mason. Their teaching will support, for example, a new concentration in the Global Affairs major, "The Environment and Global Health"; the "Energy and Sustainability" concentration within our Masters of Arts in Individualized Study; and the new B.A. degree, "Environmental and Sustainability Studies." They will also be free to pursue research collaboration with units such as the Institute for a Sustainable Earth, Center for Resilient and Sustainability Communities, Environmental Science and Technology Center, and the Center for Climate Change Communication.Responsibilities:The successful candidate for this position will maintain an active scholarly agenda in the field of environmental history. The teaching load will be commensurate with George Mason University's status as an R1 institution. Part of the teaching load will be in the Department of History and Art History, and part will be in the Carter School. Within the History and Art History Department, they will teach undergraduate courses in environmental history as well as graduate courses in their area of expertise. Within the Carter School, they will teach undergraduate and graduate courses at the intersection of environmental history, conflict, and their area of expertise, in particular as a part of the undergraduate concentration in Environmental Conflict and Collaboration and graduate work in environmental conflict.
